Gadgie Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Hi I recently had some problems with my orange broadband and in trying to sort them out the technical adviser at orange got me to change my netgear security settings to WEP (cant remember what it was previous). Will this keep my pc safe when using wi-fi? regards Quote

WEP is the least secure of the three options. I had WEP for years with no problems - but the other two are better. What problem were you having when he advised you to change to this? If you let me know the make and model number of your router I can take a look - if I can find the manual. Gadgie Posted November 9, 2011 Author Posted November 9, 2011 Hi KenB I called them up because my internet connection had become very slow, I questioned him when he suggested changing to WEP but was advised it was the best, since I didint really know anything about it I just carried out his instructions. WPA is stronger, and therefore, recommended over WEP If he has recommended WEP he obviously didn't know what he was talking about. The default setting on your router is Mixed WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK which is MUCH more secure. Netgear also recommend that the pre-set security settings are not changed. The manual for your netgear is here: Netgear Manual You will need to download it and make a note of where it was saved to. It will open in PDF format. I know how to log onto my NEtgear software, so is it just a case of selecting the correct setting from the security settings? I wonder if this is why I have developed problems with my computer due to malware infiltration due to poor security of my router? cheers Quote

Unlikely. is it just a case of selecting the correct setting from the security settings? You should be able to tick the box next to WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK and that should be it. The Network Key - as long as it is 8 characters [ 0-9 / A to F ] or more should be able to remain the same. Can't access netgear settings how do I fix this Quote
