Re-Installation Issues From CD

Windows XP Pro/MCE 2005 crashed and due to the large number of apps

installed we are doing an Win XP from the CD's and repair an existing install.

When installing from original cd's which included SP2 it fails during the

install process with "unable to load mscoree.dll" and ngen.exe will also not

run.

After the install completes when you run XP the desktop comes up ok but it

attempts to load Document Viewer and errors continously and never installs.

We are not able to start Task Manager and the system will not shut down

except turning off power.

The CD disks are clean and has failed at the same point during 3 install

attempts.

Do we need to download .Net 1.1 and 2.0 and install directly?

Could it be a virus on the drive affecting the install?

We are trying to avoid cleaning out all the apps and the drive and starting

clean.

Any ideas will be appreciated...

It could be a virus or it could be hardware. Or both. Since you forgot to

detail what "crashed" means, I can't guess. I understand that you are

trying to avoid a Clean Install but if the Repair Install doesn't work, you

have no alternative. In particular, if the errors were caused by hardware

and/or infection, a Repair Install will be useless.

If you want to provide more information about "crashed" and the specs as

well as recent history of this machine (including what antivirus/security

programs are installed), I can try to be more specific in my diagnosis.

Which may still be the same; i.e., Clean Install.

If you do wind up biting the bullet and doing a Clean Install, purchase an

external hard drive and Acronis True Image. Image your perfect install and

store that image on the external hard drive. Then you will be able to get

back to a working system in minutes rather than days.

Re: Re-Installation Issues From CD

The system I am trying to repair has 4 SATA drived a 320 and a pair of SATA

250G that were running mirrored RAID from an on-board controller. The system

also has a Buffalo 1 Terabyte USB external attached running in mirrored 500G.

Funny you mentioned Acronis I had the client buy a copy have not installed

yet. XP is running in the 320G drive. I have removed the mirrored 250G and

only have a single drive for data attached. Using this hardware and software

can I clean the 320G reinstall XP /MCE and still have all the apps work

without reloading them?

I'm sorry but I don't follow your scenario. I have no idea whether this will

work because I have no idea what caused you to need the Repair Install in

the first place.

Good luck and I'm sorry I was unable to help you.

Re: Re-Installation Issues From CD

I'm sorry for being so confusing. It has been a week since my friend called

and said his system died. If I remember XP would not startup it just kept

repeating the boot process almost start then back to the BIOS boot screen

over and over.

This client lives on this machine doing very large Xcel spreadsheets for

finance consulting. He has a lot of programs it would take a week to reload

everything.

I have been careful not to lose his data and files. The goal was to reload

XP and then hope the registry was ok and work as usual. But when I attemp to

load from the CD disks it reaches a point in the install I get an error

reading MSCOREE.DLL and the next steps cannot run NGEN.EXE. but it does

finish installing. I would say it is 90 percent there his desktop is ok and

Xcel runs. But Task Manager will not come up and Document Viewr tries ti

install but does not ever finish it has exception errors.

That is were I am at this point. You mentioned the external drive.

Should we install Arconis and backup to the external drive everything from

the working disk, format , reload XP then use Acronis to move programs back

to the drive?

I am tring not to sound totally stupid I have been building systems for 25

years but could the start and repeat automatic rebooting be a virus?

Thanks for your patience one more time.

Have you not told the customer how to disable automatic restart after a

crash?

Help is unlikely to arrive until after you furnish the stop code.

Re: Re-Installation Issues From CD

The client has never run update. His system runs XP Pro/MCE w/SP2 the way it

came on the disks. I tried to loading SP# but it crashed and we assumed it

was because XP was not running correctly at start with. It is an ASUS brd

with AMD and if I am not mistaken Dual Core.
