Guest Des Toussaint Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 I have a laptop that has SP1 installed. Thinking of upgrading it to SP2. What I'd like to know is 1: Will I lose any data 2: If for some reason I want to go back to SP1 (one of my programs may not work properly on it) can I change back easily. Thank you --

I think there will be an entry in the Add/Remove programs list. -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(Shell/User) Slattery_T@bls.gov http://members.cox.net/slatteryt

The main reason sticking with SP1 (think that's what installed - says sp1 in 'my computer/properties) was due to an old Navman GPS software that's installed on the laptop that didn't work with SP2 (this was about 3/4 years ago). I still occaisionaly use it to upload maps etc. The main reason for the upgrade is that I'm trying to use the printing facilities on my hp4700 PDA. I have a computer (win xp) that has a printer connected to it (cable). This printer is shared with another computer (vista) I have in another room (wirelessly). No problems printing via any computer. Spoke to someone else on a forum who was trying to help me print from my PDA to the printer that's connected to my Laptop. Was told to create a 'printer/share folder' network place on my computer that the printers connected to - creating 'shared folders' was OK as there are already folders that are shared. Can't or don't know how to create a printer network place. Looked up info on the net and I think I read somewhere that printer networks may not be 'visible'? If you have any ideas on how to get it working (assuming it's possible) I'd appreciate it. On my PDA the options that I have available for printing are IR; Bluetooth; Network Selected network Entered printer name Entered address location (\\(my computers name)\printer name Then a page would appear asking me for my : username / password / domain. filled in all the fields but a page keeps reappearing prompting me or my password and 'save password' options. Then it gives you the option for a 'test print' This is where it just seems to hang. Whether it's due to me incorrectly adding the wrong info, or it's just not possible to perform the request -- Des

However there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly. However unlikely, it's always possible that something might go wrong. For that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything you can't afford to lose before beginning. > 2: If for some reason I want to go back to SP1 (one of my programs may > not work properly on it) can I change back easily. Yes. Are you aware that the latest Service Pack is SP3? As far as I'm concerned, you should be upgrading to SP3, not SP2. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup

You can undo the service pack if you want. Consider SP3 which includes the SP2 items and will put you up to date with XP.
