Please help. I have an old PC with a Samsung Harappa-12 motherboard. Today, while plugging in my mouse, I mistakenly plugged in a 320 volt AC charger into the mouse port. I got a vague burning smell, though when I removed the case there was no smoke and no components looked fried or were heated.

When I turned the machine on, it began giving out a series of non-stop short beeps. The RAM works; the samsung logo appears on the screen, and when the hard drive is connected it boots to windows and sticks there. VGA is onboard, an 845 chipset, and it works. When the hard drive is disconnected, it says "Operating System not found", as per usual. Please help. I have no idea what to identify the faulty component.

Hi and welcome to ExTS

320 Volts AC Charger ??

Do you mean a 320SH Adapter - the type that plugs into a laptop ?

Either way - the mouse port wouldn't like it.

I am surprised that you could get the socket into the port - PS2 ports are basically a series of holes for pins.

I got a vague burning smell

Even with 18v you are going to get a very negative reaction.

I am not sure this is going to help BUT ................

I suggest you switch off at the wall.

Take all external hardware off the system ( Monitor / Printer etc )

Take all cards ( RAM / Video etc ) off.

Disconnect the Hard Drive & CDROM Drive power and data cables.

Leave only the 20(4) way cable from the PSU.

Switch on.

You should get POST beeps (hopefully different from the constant beeping)

If you get none at all - there is, more than likely, a m/board problem.

Thanks for replying. The port was identical to a PS2, and since all the ports/plugs in this particular machine were the same color . . .

Anyway, I did all that. I got standard POST beeps. I plugged in everything one at a time until I was left with the beep sound for no ram. When I plugged in the RAM, I got the continous short beeps again.

If you are getting the continuous beeps with the RAM in place - try the RAM modules one at a time.

It could be that just one of the modules is damaged - the machine should run OK off the other ( if a little slower ).
