File Shares/User names and passwords being remembered

We've got a Win2k3 machine set up as a simple File Server (Active

Directory not installed/activated)

Connecting in using Windows XP machines initially the machines request

user names and passwords which is good. However they then seem to

store these usernames and passwords.

Is there some way of stopping them doing this?

It gives two problems, one is that it's a security issue, and two it

means the same XP machine can't be used to log into the file shares

with different user accounts.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris.

Put the command

net use /persistent:no

into their logon script.

This is always going to be a problem if you use a workgroup. What's the

reason you haven't installed AD? That's one of the main selling points - a

single login/security database, and centralized control.

Well, in my case...

Im the only person in the tech group who is familiar with AD.

The other administrators would need some seriouse tuition.

Another thing is we use a workgroup not a domain.

Finnaly, if one of our other branches finds out I can install and run AD.

Ill be putting myself in a position I dont want to be in.... Like setting up

the whole company and helping admin the entier comany rather than just my

branch.

See, I have the opposite issue here.

I cant have the XP machine constantly prompting to log in. The sales staff

arnt the most computer litterate folkes.

I need to setup the system so only the local machines can log in without

constantly enering the password.

Wow - your company has multiple offices & doesn't use AD?

Then use simple file sharing & enable Guest. It isn't optimal, but it should

work.
