Microsoft Virtual Machine stopped working. please help.

I need help with Microsoft virtual Machine. I setup a windows 2000 and a

Windows XP virtual machine. I'm using them to run different applications

that Windows Vista cannot run.

anyways, after backing up the virtual machine files to a external hard

drive, the windows 2000 virtual machine stopped working. does anyone have

any seggestion for fixing it. the virtual machine witll not boot. when i

click the "start" to start the virtual machine I just get a blank window.

if i boot the XP virtual machine and have set it up so that its 2nd hard

drive is the primary hard drive from the windows 2000 virtual machine. it

shows that all of the files from the windows 2000 virtual machine are still

there. does anyone have any ideas of why the windows 2000 virtual machine is

not starting. please help me fix this.

I don't for the life of me understand why you included *any* XP groups, much

less three, and did NOT include the VPC group. But I thought this might give

you some hints.

Re: Microsoft Virtual Machine stopped working. please help.

I dunno. I just thought I'd Google your problem and that one caught my eye.

I don't know a *lot* about VPC, especially not VPC running on Vista. I much

prefer multi-booting. But Permissions issues are everywhere in Windows

Vista, so I thought the article might at least put you on the right trail.

I do recommend the addition of the VPC group to this thread (which I just

did), and the cutting out of at least the two non-general XP groups and the

Vista Setup group. After all, it isn't the XP installation you're having

problems with, or even Vista Setup/Installation. Your problem is a Win2K

installation on VPC on Vista. Concentrate your efforts in those arenas.

Re: Microsoft Virtual Machine stopped working. please help.

oddly I prefer multi booting or dual booting as well, but I decided to try

this for once since my OEM provider does not support dual booting. at least

they still support Windows 2000, even on the PCs that are "Vista certified".

Most manufacturers dropped support for windows 2000 years ago. now some of

them are even dropping support for Windows XP because of Windows Vista. what

the heck is wrong with them. I just hope windows 7 is a heck of a lot better

than vista so that we can all just throw vista in the trash. yet, some of us

might still be using Windows XP for our businesses if we have to.

anyways, will someone please just help me fix this virtual PC issue that i

am having....

The first thing I would try would be to delete the .vmc file for the w2k

vm and try to create a new virtual machine (from the new virtual machine

wizard) linked to the existing .vhd file.

At least he knows how to read English? He did check for a VPC group before

posting and didn't happen to hit on the magic string. You telling me you

have never spent five minutes searching for an MS group that you already

KNOW exists, trying to remember exactly what naming format MS pulled out of

their collective stupid-hat for that particular group of apps, OSes,

Servers, etc., etc.?

Re: Microsoft Virtual Machine stopped working. please help.

Steven, even though he was a jerk, Jack caused me to flash on the reason you

couldn't find microsoft.public.virtualpc is probably because it isn't

included on your ISP's news server (or whatever posting host you're using,

and in your case it looks like a different one each time.)

Try msnews.microsoft.com (no username/password required.) And STOP using

your real email address in news posts. No quicker way to get onto SPAM

mailing lists. Don't use one that could possibly be someone else's, but more

along the lines of notme@nothere.ever In OE, it doesn't even need to be in

email address format using the @, but I was using <none> for a log time and

recently a bunch of my posts got deleted from the server, probably because

that <none> triggered some stupid attempt at SPAM filtering.

Re: Microsoft Virtual Machine stopped working. please help.

well, I got good news, I some how fixed the windows 2000 virtual machine. I

found a 2nd backup of the virtual machine that I never remembered creating

in the first place...

the odd thing was that the backup of the .vhd file was on the drive that I

used to create the .vhd image in the first place, so I have no idea of how

it got there. and the other hard drive that I backed up the .vhd hard drive

file to, well somehow the file got corrupted to the point where it could not

boot.

now i'm just happy that I found a backup of the file. its just to bad it was

the original version of the file that was created and not the most recent

version of the backup. but hey, its better than nothing.

now i just have to find a way to stop these files to stop corrupting

themselves in the first place and if i cannot find a way to do that, I need

to find a way to recover the files. afterall the corruption was caused by

trying to backup the .vhd files in the first place. any ideas?

A straight copy seems to work very well. Also, I have used pkzip and rar

and f7 (zip) on them with no ill effects. I have, but have not used, the

pre-compactor. Maybe I was lucky? ;-) As far as corrupting in place,

vista VHDs seem pretty finicky and though I have not had any go to 'not

bootable' , I have had them degrade in performance and a windows VM

undocumented excursion that had worked fine with previous Windows VMs,

including the NT kernel ones, balked badly on a Vista VM.

(Vista is a curse)

How are you "backing up" these files? You haven't really said.

Don't bother to answer if you still think I'm should be damned. I'm a

volunteer here, one that has given you assistance for no reason other than I

like helping people and solving problems. But I didn't insult you in the

slightest and I believe you owe ME an apology, which I will accept because I

recognize that you made a stupid mistake.
