Hi all

I operate windows 7 and when I am uploading my pictures from the SD card from my digital camera it seems to just put them in "numbered" order. I don't always want to do that as sometimes I will have a picture of the same subject and would want it to be placed next to the other picture.

To put you in the picture! My old Windows XP software allowed me to click on the picture that I wanted to scroll across into the folder that I had picked and was able to place the picture file anywhere that I wanted in the folder next to any other picture (there would be a black vertical line that would indicate where the picture would go!)

I have looked everywhere on the "help" bit on windows 7 but cannot find how to do it. Does it mean that I just can't place pictures where I want? Will win7 only allow numbered (in order) picture file placing.

Any help will be very gratefully received.

Many thanks

Paul

There are other "sort by" or "group by" options. It may or may not give you what you want.

While in your pictures folder press the Alt key. Now you should see another toolbar at the top. Click on View to see more options. Also notice the "More" option at the bottom after you select sort by.

Short of that the only thing I can think of is to rename the pictures. Possibly by adding a number or letter at the beginning. apic1, bpic13, cpic42 or 1pic1, 2pic17 etc.

To just clarify a little more!

Windows7 is now fully numerical or alphabetical in its storage system, and there is no way of turning that off. If you want pictures side by side, you must follow an alphabetical or numbered order now.

It is a right pain in the neck I know, I also got a bit**&^% off with it at first, but learned now to name or number stuff so it falls into the right section.

I also made different folders so photo's can be placed in a folder for the subject the folder is named for.

I am afraid it is the only way.

Thanks Nev. I forgot about grouping pics into folders. I do that too now. I liked it better when I could manually sort pics too but alas the days of my old Windows ME are long gone. :D

I do already do that thanks Nev, I have an external hardrive just solely for storing my many thousands of pictures! I do sort them into these folders and have many of them, It's when I wanted to add say, another picture of a car of mine is when I wanted it to go next to the other pictures of my car although it has been taken a few months after the others.

YES, your'e right it is crap tbh but if that's the way it works then I will have to do as you suggest in the way to place the pictures numerically or alphabetically.

Bring back XP I say

Hi Paul

Just noticed....your Operating System in your details shows XP.

This could be confusing for helpers if you post another problem.

Should this read "Windows 7" ?

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Yes it should Ken, sorry about that. How do I change it as I have just had a look on my "profile page" and can't work out how to do it
