Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Re: Explorer caused an invalid page fault... You ran that from starting C:\> prompt? Is there a C:\WIN98 folder? And are you using the F8 Start Menu to get to the Command Prompt or are you using a floppy disk. It will help me to know. So you will understand, I'm under the impression that your D:\ drive is your CDROM drive and that you have put your Windows Installation CD into that drive. If that was an incorrect assumption, you need to tell me. Here's an explanation of my intent when I gave you those commands: First, I assumed you booted to a C:\> command prompt using the Startup menu. If not, before running the commands, get to the C:\ prompt, first, using c-colon md win98 (Makes a Directory called C:\WIN98) d: (switches you to D:\> prompt) cd win98 (Changes the Directory you're in to D:\WIN98) copy *.* c:\win98 Note the spaces before and after *.* in that last command, which should copy all files (no folders) from D:\Win98 to C:\Win98. That you didn't get any errors until that last one indicates to me that between us we screwed it up. Try again. If you get an error in the first command, run "cd win98" (sans quotes), then the dir command, and tell us what's there. If nothing, then proceed with the last three commands. If anything is there, start over and use "md WIN98SE" (sans quotes) and then proceed with the rest. We'll deal with the confusion later. Today went much longer than I expected, but I should be able to have further instructions for you by tomorrow, early to mid-afternoon Pacific time. (It's approaching 11pm, now, but I tend to stay up late and there's plenty left to do.) -- Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 23, 2008 Posted August 23, 2008 Re: Explorer caused an invalid page fault... First, there is a TXT attachment on this post. Extract it to a floppy, rename to NoPP.REG, and copy it to your system's C:\ drive. Then please run the following cd windows\system dir /s files32.vxd dir /s /ah files32.vxd regedit c:\nopp.reg It's to make sure you don't have Pretty Park virus. Do them one at a time and note results before running the next command. -- Gary S. Guest Mary Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Re: Explorer caused an invalid page fault... You asked what's in the Folder, C:\Windows\Window~1? After I did a directory search for IE6 setup.exe, that folder came up with the results. Can you show how I can find out what's in C:\Windows\Window~1 Reminder... You asked me to remind you to show me how to locate the product # for Win98SE. -- Mary "Gary S. Terhune" wrote: > There is one question left hanging... Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Re: Explorer caused an invalid page fault... Nevermind. It wasn't clear to me from the previous that you'd found IE6SETUP.EXE in that folder as well as in Program Files\Internet Explorer. Just to make me happy, and before you do anything else, run this command: dir c:\windows\window~1\ie6setup.exe If that returns the expected result, and lists the file and its size, etc., then continue. md IE_Files cd windows cd window~1 extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s1.cab extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s2.cab extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s3.cab extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s4.cab extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s5.cab extract /l c:\ie_files ie_s6.cab cd\ cd ie_files extract /a ie_1.cab *.* That will make files available that you will need later. Now, due to the repetition and the numerous spaces and punctuation marks, the above would be easier if you can transfer files to the machine via floppy (doesn't have to be a Startup disk, just a good, normally formatted floppy.) If you have that available to you, you can simply copy all of those command lines, paste then into a new text file (Notepad, with Word-Wrap turned OFF in the Edit menu), and save as GetFiles.bat. Transfer that to your C:\ drive and then simply run the command: getfiles We're almost ready to go, but we're still missing one bit of info. I realized that you are using the Microsoft Communities website to access the group, and that you may have missed an entire sub-thread, however I also remembered that you can't get attachments using that interface. I also messed up the commands in that sub-thread, so just ignore it and just run the following commands and report back. If we need to edit the Registry, then we'll do it a different way. cd windows\system dir /s files32.vxd dir /s /ah files32.vxd cd\ regedit /e exefile.txt hkey_local_machine\software\classes\exefile\shell\open\command (That last line should start with "regedit" and end with "\command", all on one line, with a space before "hkey_local_machine" and none thereafter. Spaces also before and after /e. Note that when long URLs or commands break into two lines or more in a newsreader, it's always at a space or certain punctuation marks. If in doubt, ask.) Then copy exefile.txt to a floppy and post the contents here. The command for that copy operation is: copy exefile.txt a: Again, it can be easier to simply copy the command lines I give here to Notepad and then save as BAT files, rather than trying to get all the spaces and stuff exactly right. But however you do it, I really need the results of the above four commands in order to make sure you don't have the Pretty Park virus. I asked before about whether you had to travel between the system you're using and the problem system because it can affect the way I plan the next steps. Give you a lot to do with lots of conditional statements (if this, then that), etc., or can we play it safer and go just a few steps at a time? Just trying to save you time and trips to the working system if it's a hardship. I'm glad to hear that it is not and I can stop thinking about it. But if you have a working Windows system, can you use its newsreader instead of the web interface? What is the OS of the system you're using to communicate? Vista or an earlier model? What do you use for email on that machine? I ask because if you can use a real newsreader, it will make following this discussion a bit easier, and allow me to transfer small files if necessary via attachment (provided your newsreader is set to allow attachments.) -- Gary S. Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 25, 2008 Posted August 25, 2008 Re: Explorer caused an invalid page fault... To get your Product Key from the Registry, and a few other things, it's easiest to use Magic Jelly Bean. http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/ But if you want to know where it's located, it's in the Registry. Use Regedit to go to: HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion The ProductKey is listed in the right-hand panel. It's in the format xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx Now, if your machine is a brand-name machine, and came with a Win98 installation CD, the code you want will be on a sticker somewhere one the outside of the machine itself. The code in the Registry is more likely from the copy used to create an installation Image (with added applications from the manufacturer) that they use to install thousands or more machines. That Registry code will NOT likely work with any CD you received, though it's possible. In any case, there's a good chance you won't need it -- unless we can't fix it. -- Gary S.
