Guest sunshinebear Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 need help with my friends computer. what it is they have managed to get a bad virus on it even though they have got AVG on it. (it seem to be working in conection with the AVG so have been told that i need to re-boot it) the virus has put an icon on the desk top that says "window xp anti-virus 2008" now i have got the copmuter in safe mode and have sorted out all the stuff that they want to keep. like all there pictures (size 207mb?) and music (1.33gb?). but what i need to know is how do i get these files to disk or a stick as i need to do it while the computer is still in safe mode (cant do anything with the computer out of safe mode) if i cant do it by putting them to disk or stick if i was to put it in safe mode with networking and transferd them to another computer say over msn or some thing like that would i transfer the virus to the other computer. the other computer is window vista. i know how to re-boot the computer just dont know how to get the files off while it is in save mode they would take the computer to pc world but he lost his job 6 week ago and they cant afford to take it. any help please as i have been trying to suss it out for the last 4 days claire

Since these are data files, there is no risk of infecting the other machine, provided that you scan them for viruses before opening them. This would be a good time to ask the owners of the machine about their backup policy. When the next disaster hits them they might lose all of their files, e.g. if the hard disk fails or if the file structure gets corrupted. A 2.5" disk in an external USB case would make a low-cost but highly effective backup device.

It's quick and easy and it doesn't matter if the system is in safe or regtular mode, because that OS version isn't running. If you want to be careful, you should take the entire user folder, as this will contain the Windows Address Book and any Outlook Express or Outlook mail files. Before you start, be sure that the host system's anti-virus is up to date, and files will be scanned as they are copied. You shouldn't have any problem with copying infections this way. I often use a shareware utility called FileSync for this purpose. http://www.fileware.com/products.htm#FileSync It works very well, but if you have files that are over 4 gig, it may show copying progress of over 100%. Also, on the host system, change the Explorer view to include showing hidden and system files. In Vista, in Explorer, click on Organize, choose Folder and Search Operations, then the View tab. You can complete this task quickly easily with an external USB2 drive case or adapter. These start around $20 - $30, are very useful, and you may be able to borrow one, remove its current drive, add this one, and put it back the way it was when done. You don't have to bolt everything together when you use the cases for this purpose. Just be sure that the case you get matches the type of drive you have, IDE or SATA. IDE drives have wide connectors with 40 pins, SATA drives have narrow connectors with no pins. They are clearly not interchangeable. You may have to move jumpers if the drives are IDE; most IDE drives want to be in Master mode, but IIRC I have found that Western Digital drives want to have no jumpers. Make a note of the current jumper settings before you start. If you've been at this for a few days, the $20 - $30 is probably well spent for the aggravation. HTH -pk

I usually just add an X at the beginning of the name. When you put the drive back and restart the system, you may well get some error messages, but the malware will not be able to launch and you will again be in control of the system. In addition, take that opportunity to empty the Temp folders. HTH -pk
