Guest cavelamb himself Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 A few weeks back someone posted the proceedure for reassigning the drive letters for external drives for another requester. It worked great, BTW. I used that to readdign all my USB hard drives to a more logical layout (rather that it being detern\mined by the order in which they were purchased. (I have two 500 Gig MyBooks and one 320 Maxtor) I usually keep these powered down and bring them on line when needed. I ran into a problem this evening when I powered up the 320 (shoulda been H:) while there was a USM pen drive installed as H:. Now my 320 is I: Would you mind reposting the command for reassigning drive letters. And - is there any way to lock them in place??? Thanks -- Richard (remove the X to email)

It will work for most other questions too! - Click Start / Help - Type "Drive Letter" in the search field (without the double quotes) - Click the most relevant help topic

Click Start / Help 2. Type "drive letter" in the search field. 3. Click "Assign, change or remove a drive letter" 4. Click the + to the left of "Using the Windows interface". 5. Click "Computer management (Local)" 6. Double-click "Disk Management". It's all there if you take the time to read the instructions. Here they are again, copied straight out of the help page: ======================= To assign, change, or remove a drive letter Using the Windows interface Open Computer Management (Local). In the console tree, click Disk Management. Where? Computer Management (Local) Storage Disk Management Right-click a partition, logical drive, or volume, and then click Change Drive Letter and Paths. Do one of the following: To assign a drive letter, click Add, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK. To modify a drive letter, click it, click Change, click the drive letter you want to use, and then click OK. To remove a drive letter, click it, and then click Remove. =======================
