Assigning drive letters (again)

A few weeks back someone posted the proceedure for reassigning the drive

letters for external drives for another requester.

It worked great, BTW. I used that to readdign all my USB hard drives to

a more logical layout (rather that it being detern\mined by the order in

which they were purchased. (I have two 500 Gig MyBooks and one 320 Maxtor)

I usually keep these powered down and bring them on line when needed.

I ran into a problem this evening when I powered up the 320 (shoulda

been H:) while there was a USM pen drive installed as H:.

Now my 320 is I:

Would you mind reposting the command for reassigning drive letters.

And - is there any way to lock them in place???

Thanks

Here is the generic answer. It will work for most other questions too!

- Click Start / Help

- Type "Drive Letter" in the search field (without the double quotes)

- Click the most relevant help topic

I don't mean to be disrespectful but if you follow my recipe then you

will get there in no time at all.

1. Click Start / Help

2. Type "drive letter" in the search field.

3. Click "Assign, change or remove a drive letter"

4. Click the + to the left of "Using the Windows interface".

5. Click "Computer management (Local)"

6. Double-click "Disk Management".

It's all there if you take the time to read the instructions. Here they are

again,

copied straight out of the help page:

=======================

To assign, change, or remove a drive letter

Using the Windows interface

Open Computer Management (Local).

In the console tree, click Disk Management.

Where?

Computer Management (Local)

Storage

Disk Management

Right-click a partition, logical drive, or volume, and then click Change

Drive Letter and Paths.

Do one of the following:

To assign a drive letter, click Add, click the drive letter you want to use,

and then click OK.

To modify a drive letter, click it, click Change, click the drive letter you

want to use, and then click OK.

To remove a drive letter, click it, and then click Remove.

I did, and I saw this.

But I see nothing on this machine named "Computer Management".

Re: Assigning drive letters (again)

*Bonjour Pegasus (MVP) * !

<news:#AiMb65#IHA.5192@TK2MSFTNGP04.phx.gbl>

It was clear enought :)

How to change a letter with DISKPART command :

Help =>

Start>Run>HH diskmgmt.chm

Start>Run>HH diskmgmt.chm::/dm_drive_letter.htm

=========>

To change the Letter of the PenDrive B to L ==>

C:\>diskpart

DISKPART> rescan

DISKPART> select volume B

DISKPART> assign letter=L

DISKPART> exit

C:\>

It's possible to make a Batch : AssignLetterZ.cmd ==>

------cut-------

@echo off

set volume=%~d0

echo select volume %volume%> %temp%\drive.log

echo assign letter=Z:>> %temp%\drive.log

echo exit>> %temp%\drive.log

diskpart -s %temp%\drive.log

del %temp%\drive.log

------cut--------

Copy AssignLetterZ.cmd on the external volume.

Run AssignLetterZ.cmd

The letter of the volume change to the letter Z.

Run "compmgmt.msc". It can also be found under Administrative Tools.

You can run diskmgmt.msc from the Start / Run box.
