Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

I've seen a screen in Win'XP that lists all the open programs and allows you

to close any or all of them.

Can't find it. Please help.

Right click on the unused area of the Taskbar and select Task Manager.

Or run "taskmgr.exe".

CTRL+SHFT+ESC is quicker.

Depends. The OP asked for a list of "all open programs" and I'll bet you he

was talking about Applications, not Processes.

Anyway, just as fast as Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Alt-Esc (which last I find

awkward to perform), or even faster, depending on how you use Windows, is to

simply right-click the TaskBar and click Task Manager. That will open to

whatever tab was open when Task Manager was last closed.

That's what CTRL+Shift+Esc does.

But using Ctrl-Alt-Del and selecting Task Manager, will also

take you to the last open tab. It's one less click to use

Ctrl-Shift-Esc, which is easy to do with your left hand.

I.ve got a Win'XP installation that has a an Item on the Taskbar called:

"Add or Remove Pograms". It has all the features you have ciollectively

described, except that it is visible at all times. I don't know where I got

it. Can anybody help?

In case the below doesn't Cancel, I realized my mistake as soon as I sent.

It's not Ctrl-Alt-Esc for TM, it's Ctrl-Shift-Esc.

Ahh, there's the rub: You must be using "new XP" interface. Using Classic

interface, Ctrl-Alt-Del bring up TM immediately.

Hi Gary,

It's been my experience that Cancel only removes the message from my

computer, the message propagates anyway.

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

The item called "Add or Remove Programs" actually has a diferent

funcionality than the programs you have collectively referred to. The

programs you have collectively referred to only shows the programs that are

actually displayed at the time. "Add or remove Programs" displays all

active programs whether displayed or not. You can actually delete running

programs whether displayed or not.

Are you using a newsreader? It will remove it from the messages there.

And no it won't remove it from the "Sent" folder, as that is just a copy

of what you posted.

Yeah, but it has to br displayed to close it. "Add or Remove Programs"

displays all running programs whether displayed on the screen or not. Hence

you can close any running prgogram even though it is not displayed on the

screen.

Are you asking, or telling? And what are you talking about Add or Remove

programs being used for stopping a running program?!?!?!? I think

perhaps you are confusing Add or Remove programs with Task Manager.

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

No, I am not confusing it with Task Manager. I have two installations of

Win'XP. One has "Add or Remove Programs" installed and one does not. In

the case of the one that has it installed it appears as a specific item on

the takbar. Opening it up shows a single list of all running programs. By

selecting any particular item on the list, it open it up, and there are one

or two buttons. The button marked Delete is always there. The button

marked Modify is sometimes there. By pressing the Delete Button one is able

to delete the selected program. Unlike the "Task Manager" version "Add or

Remove Programs" has only a single screen.

I don't know where I got it but I would like to add "Add or Remove Programs"

to the installation that currently does't have it.

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

What you are describing is "Add or Remove Programs" from the Control Panel.

It add or removes applications from the computer entirely (or as much as the

uninstaller does it's job well) and is nothing at all the same as Task

Manager, which only stops tasks or processes from running. If you used Add

or Remove Programs to do that, you wouldn't be able to start them again.

You probably managed to accidentally drag the Add or Remove Programs icon

from the Control Panel onto your Quick Launch bar. Just drag the icon off

the bar and into the Recycle Bin.

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

"Add or Remove Programs" was exactly what I was lookiing for.

It turns out that I had a program that wasn't behaving properly. It was

designed to run continually. If I exited Win'XP, it was designed to restart

when Win'XP restarted again. Imagine my frustration when the program

started misbehaving and I couldn't stop it and restart it again. I tried

"Taskmaster", but found that "End Process" didn't quite work as expected.

The Process seemed to be removed, but when I went over to the program to

reinstall it, it was still running.

Then I tried "Add or Remove Programs", and it worked perfectly.

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

LOL, I wish I could say that made sense, <s>. If I understand you correctly,

removing the program fixed your problem? Well, it would, wouldn't it?

Or am I misunderstanding you? Did you use Add or Remove Programs to remove

the program? If not, what did you do? Explain in baby steps, because you got

me real curious..

Re: Screen in Win'XP that lists all open progams!

But you don't stop applications with Add or Remove Programs, you uninstall

them completely, making them unavailable for use unless you reinstall them.

So we're still not clear about what you're doing, are we?
