Guest Peter Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I am trying to install an updated videodriver. I downloaded it from the manufacturer's web page; uninstalled the current one through the Device Manager that asks me to restart the computer when it finishes. Problem is that when it restarts it tells me that it encountered new hardware and before it gives me a chance to go into the 'Add new hardware' in the ControlPanel, it finds its own, which is an old one and I am unable to install the newer version. Help! Thank you JB
Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Re: Installing Driver Were there instructions for installing said video driver on the manufacturer's web site ? Each manufacturer can present a differing scenario for updating the driver. You said > when it restarts it tells me that it encountered new > hardware and before it gives me a chance to go into the 'Add new hardware' > in the ControlPanel, it finds its own, which is an old one and I am unable > to install the newer version. When the Hardware Wizard pops up on the reboot it *should* present you with 3 options to install the driver. The 3rd option allows you to point to the installation source. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Re: Installing Driver You can disable Plug and Play in the Services console to see if that helps or post a link to the download page for the driver. Perhaps then we'll see what the manufacturer recommends as to installing the updated driver. Guest Peter Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Re: Installing Driver Unfortunatelt the Toshiba forum is not very good. If you get a reply it will be one month later. I disabled Plug&Play in Services. The result was that I was unable to get into Add Hardware or Device Manager, at all. Tried again to uninstall the driver, but whatever I do when the computer restarts the system finds its own driver without any prompting. Tried also to install it without restarting. It tells me that the existing driver is better than the nerw one. How can that be if the version of the new one is more recent? (6.14.10.6334 against the new one 7.86.9 according to the Toshiba site. Unless these references have different meanings) Is there any way of forcing the Hardware Wizard to pop up when I restart? Guest xcal Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 Re: Installing Driver Try uninstalling your actual driver, then install a generic VGA driver reboot, be shure that Windows doesnt ask you for another driver, when all is ok, try to update, by usual methods. hope this helps, Carlos.
