Guest xcal Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Re: usb " it says that the thing can work quicker with correct host controller" it seems that you need to update your usb driver, hope this helps Carlos "jim" <jim@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:35ED9F46-064E-414B-95A2-89A00B1F3EF4@microsoft.com... > there are 2 usb ports on my computer on works one doesn't, when i put in my > flash usb mass storage device it says that the thing can work quicker with > correct host controller. when i click on the icon it shows the usb and a free > root hub, how can i configure this usb port to work please? (windows xp pro) Does it really not work or does it just give that message? That message means that that particular USB port is only USB 1.0 or 1.1 and that the USB storage device is capable of using USB 2.0. USB 2 devices *will* work on USB 1 ports, but they will be a lot slower. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310575/en-us Before you uninstall all of the USB controllers, it would be prudent to have a non-USB mouse and/or keyboard handy ... just in case. -- Lem -- MS-MVP To the moon and back with 2K words of RAM and 36K words of ROM. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Guidance_Computer http://history.nasa.gov/afj/compessay.htm

If that's the case, no amount of configuration will change this. USB1 or 1.1 hardware cannot perform at USB2 speeds. To fix that, you will install a USB2 card. These are inexpensive, easy to get and trivial to install. The second is that the motherboard DOES have USB2 ports, but the motherboard chipset drivers are not installed. In that case, install them. As all of my ports on these two Gateways and my two Asus EEE PCs are USB2 ports and I get those messages from time to time. Although I believe the Asus BIOS sets them to 1.1 speeds (for compatibility) and then when Windows or Linux boots, resets them back to USB2 speed. -- Bill Gateway Celeron M 370 (1.5GHZ) MX6124 (laptop) w/2GB Windows XP Home SP2 (120GB HD) Intel® 910GML (64MB shared)
