I received an e-mail from Microsoft with a worm!

Hello all,

 

This morning when I was downloading my e-mail from Windows live mail

and my AVG virus program told me that there was a worm in the e-mail I

just downloaded. The e-mail represented itself as follows (it's a

copy and paste and I added the quotation mark's);

 

"MS Customer

 

this is the latest version of security update, the "August 2008,

Cumulative Patch" update which resolves all known security

vulnerabilities affecting MS Internet Explorer, MS Outlook and MS

Outlook Express as well as three newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Install now to protect your computer from these vulnerabilities, the

most serious of which could allow an attacker to run executable on

your system. This update includes the functionality of all previously

released patches."

 

You'll notice that the paragraph's first word is not capitalized. Also

there was a .EXE file attachment which AVG neutralized.

 

I tried calling Microsoft to get a hold of their security and for

about an hour it was a complete exercise in futility. All I wanted

was an e-mail address that I could send a copy of the e-mail I

received representing itself as from Microsoft. Other than the no

capital letter at the beginning of the paragraph it look quite

authentic.

 

Does anyone here happened to have an e-mail address to send this to

Microsoft's security division?

Microsoft *never* sends emails with attachments unless you are specifically

requesting a hot fix. Microsoft *never* sends unsolicited emails with

attachments. Never.

 

I'm sorry that you went through all the trouble of trying to contact the

company but it is really unnecessary to do this. Microsoft and Everyone

Else knows about these types of emails (which are extremely common and have

been so for years) and there is nothing that anyone can do about it.

 

What can you do? Delete the emails unopened and move on.

It didn't come from Microsoft, Microsoft doesn't send emails like that

and Microsoft doesn't refer to itself as MS, as in "MS Customer".

to try to get it stopped. This particular e-mail is going into the

You will likely find that that email address may or may not be real, but it

most certainly isn't the real sender's address.

 

Any relevant tracing information is actually in the headers of the email,

which you should forward to your ISP instead, not here or to Microsoft.

And the legitimate owner of that address won't thank the OP for adding it to

every junk mail address list on the planet.

Actually the true IP address of the fake IP address can usually be found

by using trace. And the second to the last IP address is the *real*

sender of the message. You can access trace here.

"I received an e-mail from Microsoft with a worm!" was exactly the

subject line. I did not say it was a legitimate Microsoft e-mail but

the e-mail itself did say it was from Microsoft and it did have a warm

according to my antivirus program.

 

The body of the post left no doubt that I knew the e-mail itself was

not legitimate.

 

All I am trying to do is stop this thing before it infects someone.

I know Albert! And everybody is making light of your serousness and telling

you to just delete it. I guess they just don't care. Which I find is very

sad.
