Hi,

I have some trouble with my graphics card while installing windows 7.

My card is a Geforce 7950Gx2 and it reecently ''split up'' into a 7900GTX 7950Gx2. But it does work, and i read somewhere that i need to send it in for it to get fixed but f that i'll rather buy a new pc. And now to my problem, when the finishing touch of the installation is about to happen (enter user name and password etc) the screen goes black, no cursor, no nothing. Pure black. i friend told me that i could boot in safemode and enter compmgmt.msc thought the cmd and disable the 7900GTX gpu so that i run 7950Gx2. but since my pc is obviously running on the 7900GTX i can't do that. So, i ask,

How do i make the pc use the other GPU, the 7950Gx2???? This is a single card but nVidia built it out of two older cards (7900GTX)

This is simply untrue, the card is a dual card not made of two older cards....

GeForce 7950 GX2 features a knockout pair of GeForce processors on one irresistibly powerful board. This dual-GPU board features an astounding 1 GB of fast GDDR3 memory and support for resolutions up to 2560 X 1600. It’s a beautiful thing.

As you have not explained fully on this issue we cannot help you much at the moment....

Could you explain more fully on what your GPU setup is please?

Firstly are both the GPUs PCI card ones or is one onboard GPU as in built into the mainboard and one is PCI slot?

If both GPUs are PCI cards then remove one...

If a GPU is broken its broken, you would need to buy a new one....

Once removing the one GPU PCI card connect the monitor to the one you wish to keep.....

If one is onboard as in attached to the mainboard, connect the monitor to the PCI card one.

Remove BIOS battery for 20 seconds, replace, reboot the computer....

A black screen can also indicate badly fitted RAM or faulty RAM.....

Right, sorry then. I read somewhere that it was built out of two 7900GTX and allso while looking at it in my pc, it does look like two cards connected and using the same PCI slot xD

I have no onboard videocard, i would have used that one instead if i had :(

As i stated above th card uses one PCI slot, looks like this: http://hardverapro.hu/dl/upc/2011-10/349161_card_1.jpg

Hi

reecently ''split up'' into a 7900GTX 7950Gx2.

How do you know ?

Your Video Card is made up of 2 PCBs

Each has a 7900 core.

For those reading this the image shows the 2 PCBs which are linked together by a small circuit board.

I am unsure how your card can "split" as you suggest.

Switch on and constantly tap F8 ( about once per second )

Select Safe Mode from the list of options

If you can boot up ....

Start > type in .......devmgmt.msc .......ENTER

Click the plus next to Display Adapters

What is listed?

Are there any yellow exclamation marks ?

eh, i have two exclamation marks but they are for my PCI input device and multimedi audio controller(sound card is not compatible with w7). But the soundcard has run fine all of the other times i had windows 7 :)

You still have not answered this:

Click the plus next to Display Adapters

What is listed?

If you have 7900GTX / 7950Gx2 listed as you say in your first post then right click on 7900GTX and disable.

A simple trick is to tright in Device Manager click at the top of the list and choose scan for hardware changes...

Update and install hardware drivers and software for the card.....

Turn off the computer, open her up and touch the PSU for a few seconds.....

Remove the PCI slot GPU.....

Plug the monitor into the onboard graphics card.

Power on the computer.

Logon then go to device manager.

Now what does it say listed for your graphics card?

Does it say the onboard graphics card is a 7900GTX?

What is the make and model number of your mainboard?

damn xD

KenB: Bot of them, first the 7900GTX with a windows WDM driver installed. And under that, the 7950Gx2 is listed allso with WDM drivers installed.

I have done that and when i try to run the installation i get a error. That's why i ask if there is some way to make the screen use the other part of the card instead. (The 7950Gx2)

Jelly: That is not possible because i have no onboard graphics :( The 7900GTX is a prt of my graphicscard (7950Gx2), it used to say 7950Gx2 but for a while now it has been saying 7900GTX instead :(( my mobo is K9N Neo v2 http://www.msi.com/product/mb/K9N-Neo-V2.html#/?div=Detail

I have done a little reading regarding your card.

If it is showing 7950GX2 and 7900GTX in device manager - this is correct.

If you are not seeing any yellow exclamation marks then the drivers appear to be OK.

In Device Manager > right click on the 7950GX2 > Properties.

Does it say that the device is working properly?

Do the same for the 7900GTX

Does it say that the device is working properly?

You can try updating the driver software from here.

Right click on the 7950GX2 > update driver > select the Auto option.

my pc is obviously running on the 7900GTX

How have you come to this conclusion ?

Both of the devices run properly yes :)

I came to that conclusion because when i disable the 7950Gx2, nothing happebs. The screen goes black as usual. But if i instead of the 7950 disable the 7900GTX i get an error. So it must it, doesn't it? :/

I suspect that one side of your video card has a problem. ( Which I think you suspected too )

The way to test this is to put the card in another system and see if you get the same errors.

Failing this - if you take it to a good tech he will be able to tell you if the card is functioning properly.

I suggest you ask him first how much it will cost to tell you if the card has a problem.
