Guest amzd Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 How can I remove a started setup/installation of Windows Server 2003and restore the old operating system? Hello, Because on my server with Windows Server 2003 I had an error message "ntldr not found" I started it with the setup-CD. Actually I wanted to try to repair it. However, after initiating the setup it took quite long so in between I went to my work place. When I came back it was way down the installation procedure in the GUI part already but finally it couldn't find some files and stopped. Unfortunately now it always runs into the setup which does not work, I have no choice to boot in the old windows Server 2003 operating system. I tried F8 and chose last known good and again it runs into the erroneous setup. First I thought may be it has created a temporary setup partition and just rerouted the boot.ini into this setup. I checked the boot.ini with knoppix but it had only one line in it which the server uses for booting. Is there any way to remove the started setup and have the machine boot in the old windows server 2003 operating system? The ntldr message was only because s.o. had put a non-bootable floppy in the machine which I didn't notice – a lapsus which feels like a bad joke… Thank you Andreas

To protect yourself against similar mishaps in future it might be a good idea to create an image of the completed installation, using an imaging program such as Acronis TrueImage.

Too bad, I thought perhaps it has prepared some files with a special marking which could be removed or some such. However, the setup always runs against the same error where it misses some files... So how could I start a fresh setup - for which right now there is no option when starting the machine since it ignores the CD. I can hit the button start from CD and it continues in the setup where it has left off last time. It leaves no other options. Does someone have an idea how to get around this? Thank you Andreas

It may even be sufficient to delete boot.ini.
