Guest cuyocksol Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 From the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar I select to remove my USB flashdrive (Buffalo brand). I get the proper 'now safe' pop-up, but I then find that my broadband connection has also invariably been disconnected. (This is the other option in Safely Remove Hardware: "SpeedTouch USB ADSL PPP" - but I do not select it.) I then have to manually reconnect to the internet, and sometimes it won't even do this till after restart. (Windows XP home edition with SP3)

Obviously disconnecting the Flash is causing a transient condition that causes the modem connection to fail. Try a different port if this is the case. I think if you unplug the modem for a few seconds, then plug it back in XP should find it again. As someone suggested, if the modem and computer have LAN ports, use them.

I dunno if I have a different cable I can use with my modem (LAN/Ethernet?), I can look... But I don't see why this problem should be occurring. Why are both USB ports deactivated if only one hardware option is requested to be removed?

Many motherboards have a Single enhanced controller. So a USB 2.0 device plugged into ANY socket will route to that enhanced controller/hub. Also there are several USB1(.1) controller/hubs that are socket dependant. How the devices interact depends on what technology they are and which sockets they are plugged into. To determine cause, you'd have to check the Power consumption and the bandwidth used with both devices plugged in.
