Guest Word Painter Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 hello, i wanted to format and partition a new drive, but couldn't seem to find the disk admin panel anywhere (XP pro). MS' website said to run "compmgmt.msc" from the command line. oddly enough, this brings up an "install dialog", preparing to install Diskeeper Lite, which I already installed some time ago. I have to click many times to cancel the install process, and am considering nuking DK lite because of this headache and other screen nags, etc. my questions, how did DK lite "hijack" the Disk Managment console? can i get it back? any other place that I can run disk mgmt from rather than the arcane command prompt? thanks for any help ... Wp

Disk Management is the last option in the left-hand tree under Storage. HTH -pk

Go to Start and click on Run. In Run, enter diskmgmt.msc in the Open box. Click OK. As for your other questions, the Computer Management console incorporates a number of components, called Snap-ins, that can be run as separate consoles. One of them is Disk Defragmenter, dfrg.msc. When you installed Diskeeper Lite it took over the job of dfrg.msc and became a part of the Computer Management console. Computer Management can be launched from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools. Just out of curiosity, what happens when you try to run Diskeeper lite from the Start menu? You might want to uninstall and reinstall Diskeeper Lite to see if it clears up the install dialog issue. Beyond that, you may find this utility from Microsoft helpful. (thanks Patrick, easier to find it from "manage" shell menu ...)
