strange cursor issue

I have a dell laptop running XP sp3

it has a touchpad and I had a USB mouse connected.

the cursor sometimes took on a mind of its own and starts drifting

across the screen.

At first I thought it was the mouse moving on the desk.

when it didn't want to stop I unplugged the mouse and it kept going.

 

I can't tell if it is an issue with the pad or s/w.

and I don't know where to start looking.

 

has anyone run into something like this?
