Hi, ive just gone from vist to xp as I couldnt get used to windows mail etc,

but the last two days i have not been able to send any emails from my laptop,

i can receive no problem and i can send from Bt's webmail so im assuming its

something thats changed on my laptop. The message i get is:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

Subject: testing

Sent: 14/08/2008 19:17

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

'andyc0000@hotmail.com' on 14/08/2008 19:17

550 <andyc0000@hotmail.com>... Relaying denied

Thanks

First off, if you haven't done so already you might want to post your question

to the Outlook newsgroup.

That said, you might want to check with your ISP. Their outgoing (SMTP) server

may require authentication. You can configure that in Outlook by clicking on the

More Settings button in your mail accounts properties sheet and clicking on the

Outgoing Server tab.

Good luck

Relaying often means that you aren't logged on through your ISP's network,

but are instead connected through another network, possibly at a workplace.

Virtually no ISP allows connection to their SMTP servers from outside their

network anymore. This is pretty much the case for any SMTP server on Port

25.

When you use Webmail, you aren't using the SMTP servers, so the problem

doesn't exist.

Is the laptop in a different physical location? That would be the kind

of change that can cause this. If you're going to be travelling with the

laptop, this will happen, and the workaround is to get a 3rd party mail

account, such as gmail, and use its outgoing server. Then you can send

mail from any network.

Thanks for the quick answer. May sound like a stupid question but wouldnt

that confuse people if my email is xxxx@btconnect and then im replying with a

gmail address or is it possible to reply using the bt address on gmail ?

There are a few details on both your email client and the gmail account you

change to alter this. On the client, it's the "reply to" address. On

gmail, you change the "from" address so it appears that the mail comes from

your bt address. Read through the gmail help and setup pages and you

will see how to do this.

However, some mail clients will display both addresses, in the form of "sent

from, on behalf of". But if the reply-to address is set properly, the

recipient needs do nothing excetp click "reply" to send the reply to the

correct address.

This does work well, I use it myself and have set up a number of other

people who travel this way.

The alternative is to pay for a 3rd party mail account, which will do

basically exactly the same thing.

Anybody can send, but for receiving all the info has to be correct, eg

password, username, protocols, etc.
