Reinstall Win98SE Without A Floppy Drive?

I've read in this newsgroup that Windows should be reinstalled about every 2

years. As I wrote in earlier posts, the floppy drive on my computer has a

problem--I think it's the controller--so I can't use a boot disk. The

question is, after reformatting the hard drive, can Windows be installed

from the cd without installing the cd drivers from the Win98SE boot disk?

It should be reinstalled IF there is a problem that needs that.

Otherwise, no. It's not like an oil change.

No, to your question about installing from CD without drivers.

Bull****, to the ridiculous misinformation that Windows needs to be reinstalled on

any schedule. I have not had to reinstall any version of Windows on any of the

systems I work with, ever. Currently that's about 20 systems here and at work.

Daffy

My WIN98SE CD boots just fine. All other previous replies are appropriate.

Not at all inappropriate. Only OEM Win98 discs are bootable. Retail disks are not.

You have an OEM disk. We assumed Daffy has a retail disk.

Thanks for bringing up the distinction, although you did it by accident and don't

appear aware of it.

To Daffy: Do you have an OEM or a Retail disc?

As another has said, that depends on which 98SE CD type you have: some

(most I think) are not self-booting.

You also need a BIOS that can boot from CD; many of the '98 vintage

can't, and if not, it doesn't matter _what_ CD type you have.

I think it's retail. The CD and manual was provided by the instructor when I

built my computer in a class I took. I installed the OS myself.

Re: Reinstall Win98SE Without A Floppy Drive?

It was something I just read in this group but I can't find the post.

The theory is that the OS becomes bloated with so many files that if Windows

keeps crashing or performance suffers then doing a clean install every

couple of years will get everything running smoothly, kind of lighten the

load.

It's not my theory, but it sounded plausible. But it would be a pain in the

rear to wipe everything clean that often.

The reason for all that "bloat", etc., is poor maintenance and poor user

habits, nothing else. There is no inherent, good reason for arbitrarily

reinstalling Windows on some set schedule unless you're just plain,

willfully ignorant.

Re: Reinstall Win98SE Without A Floppy Drive?

It wasn't this group because you are not getting away with the basic

theory right now, it never would have done any better in the past

either. I have read as much though mainly on "guru" sites where one

guy is in charge. Usually such clutter comes about from trying every

new program to come down the road and often they don't have good

uninstallation methods to them so they tend to trash up a system

sooner or later.

Reinstallation of Windows is hardly a pain as it's a half hour job

with no hands on nothing here. What is a pain is reinstalling all

your favorite do-dads, it can take me three days just to remember most

of what I had.
