Guest Navyguy Posted August 15, 2008 Posted August 15, 2008 I have a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP SP2, with DSL connection. I recently downloaded several Microsoft updatesand have it set to automatic. However it wasn't able to download the Security Update KB921596 for some reason and I have tried several times but keeps giving me a 0x57A error. In addition the automatic update icon keeps coming back but each time i try it it fails. Can anyone assist me and tell me how to go about getting this resolved? Thanks, Robert

Download the update from this link (SAVE it to your desktop, don't RUN it): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=bf566ce6-23da-45e5-9c2b-c47331d30e79 2. Insert your Office XP CD (if available) into the appropriate drive bay. 3. Guest Navyguy Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Re: Microsoft Updates: Hello Robear, I followed your steps and it didn't work and I recieved the following error message: Error 1402 setup cannot open the registry key. KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Software\classes\giffile\shell\Open\ddeexec. Verify you have permissions to access the registry or contact your computer manufacturer's product support for assistance. Why is it that some updates are so involved and need the user to take all these steps? Isn't the point of updates to make things easier? I would appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. Guest Navyguy Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Re: Microsoft Updates: Hello Robear, Yes the resolutions solved the problem and I did back up the registry before doing so. To answer your other question, no I do not have SP3 and didn't know that it was available. I check Microsoft updates on a regular basis and would have thought that if it was available it would say so and prompt me to install it. Am I incorrect in this? I want to thank you for taking the time to help me. Unfortuately, when I logged on the computer today I have another issue but it's with AVG which when updating came back with an error message saying a bin file is missing? So now I have that to deal with. Guest PA Bear [MS MVP] Posted August 17, 2008 Posted August 17, 2008 Re: Microsoft Updates: Office XP SP3 is already installed, otherwise KB921596 wouldn't have installed. Office Update (US) http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx If you open http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and you're taken to a *Windows* Update page, you can make *Microsoft* Update your default by clicking on the link at bottom right ("Upgrade to Microsoft Update"). After doing so, Automatic Updates will offer updates for Windows, Office, and most Windows Live applications. If AVG v8.0.138 hasn't already downloaded the most recent definitions update (Virus DB 20.6.4/1616), update manually to resolve the "a .bin file is missing" error. Again, you're most welcome & thanks for your feedback.
