Windows XP Service Pack 3 and B.S.O.D.

Last night I "attempted" to d/l Windows XP Service Pack 3. After a lengthy

d/l and isntall, I rebooted my desktop computer (I am writing this from my

laptop) and instantly received B.S.O.D. and now my desktop will not even

restart in safe mode. I am getting no where; it is an endless cycle of

restarts and B.S.O.D, and no safe mode, even though I select it ... the

computer just starts up again ... over and over. It appears I will now have

to do a wipe of the HD and re-install Windows ... and am not happy to say the

least.

I would greatly appreciate any expert answers that address this question.

before wiping the hard drive, I would attempt a repair install of XP

Have you tried to boot with the option not to automatically restart, or boot

with last known good config?

if you can get it to boot without auto restart you can get an error message

to post for us.

Systems with AMD processors would experience this issue and there is

some free tech support you can get from Microsoft if you'd like.

Not all AMD processors have this problem, only the ones provided with HP

computers. For HP computers, see

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and

e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada.

Yes, "last known good config" was tried and the same thing happens ... just

automatically restarts back to the same place ... where I get to choose

normal, safe or last known good config...

Great ... from that link you provided ... which I appreciate ! ... I c/c/p

THIS:

"You must install this update prior to applying Windows XP SP3 update".

A little late methinks.

If you can get into Windows, uninstall SP3, apply the update and then

reinstall SP3.

If that was your fix, you'd be getting a STOP 0x0000007E error and you'd be

able to boot into Safe Mode with WinXP SP3 installed.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 and B.S.O.D.

Thank you everyone for all the great help. I ended up in an hour-long chat

with a MS person troubleshooting the thing ... to have to use my XP cd to do

just that ... uninstall SP3 ... and ran into a wall. This PC was given to me

by a co-worker and in order to use the CD to repair, I need an admin

password! I have yet to reach her to obtain it, and the MS person is

e-mailing me the required steps to proceed once I have that PW. Thanks for

all the help, and I appreciate the timely responses from all of you. I

finally got to see the error message also; STOP: 0x0000007E.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 3 and B.S.O.D.

The error message is indeed STOP:0x0000007E, but I was not ever able to enter

safe mode at all ... just an endless loop of restarts. I was in chat with a

MS person for an hour, as I stated to another responder, and have hit a snag

in using the Windows XP cd to repair (remove / uninstall) SP3. I will keep

checking back here for responses and let you know how it all turns out. Thank

you all for the assistance! Much obliged!

Sometimes the password is just to tap the <Enter> key.

>

Try a rescue cd that doesn't require a password to access the C:\ drive.

For future reference, http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=31844

"Using Gpedit.msc (XP Pro only)

Enable: Local Policy/Security Options: Recovery Console:

Allow automatic administrative logon

Or, By Making a Registry edit (All XP versions)

Using your mouse, Highlight and then Right-click | Copy the entire

contents of the Code box below, including blank lines:

Code:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows

NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole]

"SecurityLevel"=dword:00000001

Open a new Notepad document. (Do not use a Word Processor or WordPad).

Click "Format" and be certain that Word Wrap is not enabled.

Right-click | Paste the Code box contents from above into Notepad. Click

File, Save as..., and enter (including quotation marks) as the filename:

"RCFix.REG". [sH: Save As "all files" in Notepad.] Exit Notepad.

Double click your new file and agree to the registry merge when asked.

You can then delete this new file."

There are instructions at that url to add cmdcons, the Recovery Console

on the hard drive. I think a usb winxp boot stick might work also.

You just need to get to C:\Windows so you can change directory (cd)

so you can use spuninst.exe

Method 2: Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder

c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

2. When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.

3. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.

Thanks again to all the replies. My co-worker who gave me the PC did not know

the password for admin to continue with the uninstall of SP3. e-machines

apparent;y has a built-in copy of Windows XP and I was able to do a complete

wipe and reinstall. It has taken a long time do get all the updates for

Windows now, but I am finally done. The ONLY install I have not performed is

SP3 again! A bit hesitant to say the least!

I am off on vacation for a week shortly. Just wanted to drop a line once

again to say Thank you to all the excellent advise and help.

This is a great community and forum, and I appreciate the responses.

You should be good to install SP3 now. After a clean wipe, I cannot

see you having any issue.

Once you had WinXP SP1 installed, you could've skipped SP2 (and about 100

updates) and gone straight to SP3.
