usb problems

I am currently running Windows XP Media Center 2005 and am having problems

with my usb devices. My printer and MP3 player were working fine up to

recently, now my system says something is plugged in but does not recognize

anything. I have tried the supposed "HOT FIX", unplugging & plugging in every

device, and the suspending power fixes to no avail.

Can anybody help me out?

Apparently from what I read, SP3 fixes this problem, but alas there is

problems installing that as well.

HELP ME!!

I had made no changes to any programs or hardware prior to this. I even ran

an AVG Anti-virus scan to make sure everything was clean.

Have you already installed the Intel Chipset Drivers? Give it a shot.

Download free from Intel here:

Downloaded the Intel chipset drivers as suggusted, but it came with an error,

" system does meet requirements". Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks for the chipset suggestion Chicago Wolf.

Ok, that likely tells me you don't have an Intel chipset drive. Can

you download CPU-Z 1.46, run it, and tell me some info on the

"Mainboard" tab. It'll tell me if it is a non-Intel chipset and more

system information.

Intel chipset drivers are only for motherboards that use Intel chipset

controls. With an ATI northbridge / southbridge, I believe you might

need the drivers form the motherboard maunfacture or AMD/ATI.

Ok, my only guess would be to update the ATI chipset drives since this

is an ATI based and not an Intel based chipset motherboard. That makes

sense why the Intel ones didn't work. Do you have any clue as to the

motherboard maker and model? If you open the case door it'll usually

be printer in big letters such as Gigabyte ABC-123 or ASUS XYZ-123

Pro.

My guess is that the makers of the motherboard have released new

drivers for the motherboard you ma not have installed yet.

I have downloaded and installed the chipset from ATI. The board manufacturer

is GATEWAY. This did not solve any issues. System still says unknown device

when anything is plugged. I also brought the system to the office to work on

and the system still has one unknown device in the USB root even though

nothing was connected.

I am getting really confused now!!

Ok, don't panic..yet. Ha! What model Gateway is this? What you can

also do is click on that Unknown Device, delete it, and then click the

Action menu > Scan for hardware changes and see if it finds the device

or just puts the unknown device back in there. If it just says unknown

device after that, go and grab this nifty utility called "Unknown

Devices" 1.4.20 from here (http://www.halfdone.com/ukd/). Fire it up

and see if it gives any details as to what the Unknown Device might

be.

Actually it is an Emachines #H5038 system with Gateway manufactured board.

Ok, from what I can gather, this is using XP Media Center Edition?

Does CPU-Z tell you what BIOS Version is currently there? It would

appear on the Mainboard tab.

Thanks for all the help, but I finally solved the problem. I went out and

bought and installed a new USB-PCI card. Just finished installing it and

seems to be working so far.

Thanks

Well, as long as it works now I guess.
