Hi all,

 

I bought an ASUS N55S yesterday and have been very pleased with it overall. Whilst I had no problem connecting to my wireless connection, it is extremely slow. Youtube videos take a very long amount of time to load, even 240p resolution is barely watchable. Even small images take a long time to load and I am continuously havign to refresh pages because they time out.

 

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I do not want to have to return it. I got it at a very good price and like the processor and graphics card.

 

OS: Windows 7.

Have not installed anything extra apart from Google Chrome, Microsoft Security Essential and Medieval 2: Total War Gold Edition. All were installed after I experienced the problem. (I originally thought internet explorer was the issue)

Hi and welcome to ExTS

 

In cases like this ( new laptop ) I always advise having a word with the seller.

You have spent a lot of money and you need the machine to be right.

 

From what I can find - this machine comes with 6GB RAM.

Is this the case with yours?

 

I assume that you have Win7 64bit?

I bought the laptop online. Everything seems fine and it seemed fine when buying it online, just super slow.

6GB RAM and Win7 64 bit like you said.

What you describe could be due to a bad RAM module.

 

I assume that you will not be invalidating the warranty by removing the RAM?

 

Shut down and remove the battery and the power adapter.

 

The RAM is located underneath a panel in the base of the machine.

You probably have 3 x 2 GB.

Locate the panel and if you have 3 modules - remove one.

 

Run the machine.

If it is no better - swap the module you removed for one of the others.

(Note which one you have just swapped)

 

Replace the last one and try.

 

Obviously if your machine runs OK ( and it should ) with 4GB then the RAM you have removed is faulty.

Ok thanks, I'm not sure if the warranty would still apply because it says no modification. I'll look into this and contact the sellers as well. I'll post back within the next 20 minutes.

Well, not exactly sure about warranty, but as far as I can tell because I have used the computer I won't be able to return it. Will try to remove the Ram modules as you suggested now.

I don't know what sort of warranty you have - but how can you tell if the machine functions correctly if you can't use it ??

Sorry for the late reply.

 

I was wrong about the warranty, I misread it.

 

I tried to find the RAM as you suggested. I don't have much computer knowledge, but I found some helpful tutorials. I tried following them, but the interior of my computer looks very different to any of the tutorials. I couldn't find the RAM modules. I'm not really confident enough in my skills to try and take them out because it isn't as straightforward as I thought initially.

 

I actually tried connecting the computer to my hub via an Ethernet cable and it worked fine, the connection was as fast as it should be. Does this mean that it isn't the RAM after all? The ehternet is approximately 10 - 12 times faster than wireless. Don't know if that info helps.

It would seem that the RAM is not your problem.

 

For future reference the RAM is located under a panel in the base.

You are interested in the download speeds for both wireless and a wired connection.

Use the wireless connection where you would normally operate the laptop.

Let me know what the two speeds are.

Wireless: Download Speed 7.16 Mb/s

Upload Speed 0.39 Mb/s

 

 

Wired: Download Speed 9.65 Mb/s

Upload Speed 0.93 MB/s

 

When I did the test for wired, it was pretty stable. When I did the tes for wireless, the download speed was jumping around everywhere from 1.4 to 9.2 Mb/s, with the number 2 appearing a lot.

Oh yeah, not sure if this helps but I tried downloading a file yesterday, just under 2 gb big. It was going to take over 24 hours to download, possibly more since it took 12 hours just to download (I did wait for the estimated time to be realistic) whereas it took 37 mins on Ethernet connection.

Start > type in .....devmgmt.msc ....ENTER

Click the + next to Network Adapters

You should have 2 listed.

One will have "wireless" or "WiFi" in the device name.

 

Right click on this > Update drivers.

 

You need to be connected to the internet. Use the auto search option.

I get a whole bunch of options, wireless, bluetooth etc..

 

There are two wireless options: Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adaptor and Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adaptor 2.

 

When trying to update them I get a security message : windows can't verify the publisher of this driver software. Is it safe to proceed?

This is what it says - virtual.

It is not the actual Wireless Adapter but a feature of Win7 that uses the adapter to create a virtual network.

Yes - this is the Wireless Adapter

 

Try this:

Start > Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings > Advanced Settings

Select the Troubleshoot Tab and adjust the Hardware Acceleration Controller to "None." Click Apply > Ok

You may not be able to alter "Accelleration" but it is worth a try.

I can't find that option sorry.

I can go to: Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Display, don't know if that is the same. Or there is Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Display. Neither have an advanced settings or troubleshooting?

I tried hardware and device troubleshooter, that didn't do anything though.

Try this:

Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Change display settings > Advanced settings > Troubleshoot

Hopefully you will be able to adjust Hardware Acceleration Controller to "None." here.

 

I am using Vista and assumed 7 would be the same - sorry.

Some Video Adapters let you change the Acceleration option - some don't.

 

downloading a file yesterday, just under 2 gb big. It was going to take over 24 hours.....it took 37 mins on Ethernet

There is always a discrepancy between wired and wireless - but not this bad.

 

Even 37 mins is a long time.

 

Wireless: Download Speed 7.16 Mb/s

Wired: Download Speed 9.65 Mb/s

This is what I would expect and doesn't explain why you are getting poor video.

 

Play this and let me know the results.

My speeds are similar to yours and this plays ok for me.

 

You could try turning the power off to the router > leave for 1 minute > switch on.

I've tried turning off the router and turning it one again.

 

On other computers in the house, the 37 mins file would take about 50mins on wireless. I've also tried disabling all of the other computer's wifi adapters, and turning them all off and nothing changes.

 

The video plays, but it took about 30 - 45 seconds to buffer the first 5 seconds. About 30 seconds to load each next 5 seconds. Then it upwards of a minute to buffer the next couple of seconds, then suddenly in like 5 seconds it buffered around 20 seconds of the video. If I try moving the slider to an unloaded part of the video it doesn't load it at all. In the lower quality, it is better, if I leave it paused for a couple of minutes it loads the whole thing.

 

The odd thing i that when I was doing the speed test, it was jumping all over the place.

With the Ethernet it just stays within its range , not varying too much away from the 7-10 area.

Do the other computers give similar results - i.e. poor video on wireless connection ?

 

If so it is either a router issue or your ISP is limiting your download.

Contact the ISP and ask if there is a problem with the connection and are they limiting your ability to stream video.

No, the other computers are fine. They have a wireless speed similar to this Ethernet speed. Videos load fine and pictures are instant as they should be.

OK - the problem lies with the new laptop .......obviously :)

 

Go back to device manager ( devmgmt.msc) and disable the two virtual WiFi devices.

Right click on them > Disable.

 

Try the connection.

 

If this doesn't do it .............right click on the actual device [ the Intel Centrino ] > Uninstall.

Re-boot the computer and Windows will locate New Hardware and re-install the drivers.

 

Check the connection again.

This has helped a lot. The connection has become much faster in general, although videos are still very slow.

Videos are still slow, but they are a little faster than before, if I wait a few minutes,I can load a 360p video, whereas before that was not possible. Everything else loads in a couple of seconds though, like they're supposed to.
