Guest Neil Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hi: I am running XP on an XP DeskStation P4 which auto updated tonight. When turned on the xp login password was initially not recognized with several restarts required. On first succesful restart it appears that the system is running on an old IBM preload NTFS partition and not on the old second preload partition. Restore point to last pre-auto update did nothing. How do I restore to the second partition? Neil

How > do > I restore to the second partition? > > Neil From your description it appears that you have several partitions on your disk and you are now running off the wrong partition. The Windows "System Restore" facility would have no effect on this issue: It restores the current Windows installation to a previous point but it won't affect other Windows installations (nor should it!). A good starting point would be to post your current partition layout: - What partitions do you have? - Which ones are primary, which ones are logical? - Which one is active? - Where is the preferred version of Windows installed. This is usually done with a partition manager, e.g. Acronis DiskDirector. Alternatively you could temporarily connect the disk as a slave disk to some other WinXP/2000 PC and run diskmgmt.msc. You should also report the contents of the hidden file c:\boot.ini.
