AuldRocker Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Hi. I have a similar problem. The hard drive on my Acer laptop seems to have given up. It's a Western Digital Scorpio drive with 250Gb and it was running Windows Vista. I've tried connecting it to my desktop using a 2.5 inch SATA to USB adapter which is running Windows 7 Ultimate but when connected, my desktop slows down temporarily then reports that the laptop HD is not available. So I can't gain access to the drive. My desktop has a Pentium 4 3.0GHz and 4Gb RAM. Is there anything I can do to get my desktop to recognise the 2.5" drive? Quote
KenB Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Hi and welcome to ExTS I have split your post from the other thread - you are better with your own :) When you connect the old hard drive to the desktop if you go to Computer - does it show there? If you go to Start and type in ....diskmgmt.msc ......does it show there ? reports that the laptop HD is not available. It actually recognises it as a hard drive - but says it is not available ? AuldRocker Posted December 17, 2011 Author Posted December 17, 2011 Thanks for the reply, KenB. No, it doesn't show anywhere, i.e. it is not recognized. I've tried disk management and it doesn't show there either. Quote
KenB Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 How does the system report that the drive is not available when you connect it? If you cannot get the drive recognised and to show up in Computer we will not be able to access it or run any checks on it. Try this - it has worked on occasion in the past: Wrap the drive tightly with clingfilm. Then put the drive in a plastic bag ( food bag ? ) and expel as much air as you can. Seal it up and put it in a freezer over-night. You are trying to stop condensation forming on the drive. Connect up to the adapter again and see if it is recognised now. This will not harm the drive ( it is not accessible anyway ). Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! AuldRocker Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 Hi Ken, Did what you suggested but no luck. The drive is not being recognized. However, when I re-booted my desktop and went into the setup menu, the drive was recognized there. Not on windows explorer though. Quote
KenB Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Did what you suggested but no luck was this after freezing? Does it show in Diskmanagemt ? Have you tried a different USB Port ? Are you sure that the adapter is functioning correctly? Quote There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !! AuldRocker Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 Ken, The hard drive was frozen! It does not show in Diskmanagement. Tried a different usb port and the adapter is working fine. Tried it with my partners laptop HD. I noticed that after it showed up on the desktop setup menu, the PC wouldn't boot! I disconnected the rogue drive and my desktop booted as normal. Quote
KenB Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 the PC wouldn't boot! It could be that the external drive is higher in the Boot Order ( BIOS ) than the Primary Drive. I don't suppose the drive shows in Device Management does it ? Start ......type in .......devmgmt.msc ....ENTER Click the + next to Disk Drives.
