Real life experience needed: How fast is Win 2008 RemoteApp overthe Internet?

Hi,

I'm in charge of planning a new network for our company. Because of

limited financial and human resources our idea is to run it completely

with W2K8 Terminal Services RemoteApp.

At the moment we got one headquarter and two independent branch offices

connected over the internet via VPN:

- Headquarter: 10 Workstations, 2 MBit SDSL (2000/2000)

- Branch 1: 5 Workstations, 1 MBit SDSL (1000/1000)

- Branch 2: 2 Workstations, 128 kBit ISDN (128/128) (rural area, no DSL!)

I already installed a W2K3 TS at HQ and people in HQ are working over

100 MBit LAN without problems.

My plan is to deploy a W2K8 TS at the HQ, so the branch offices can work

with published RemoteApps over the internet.

Question: Can anyone provide me with some real life experience with

Windows 2008 TS RemoteApp over the internet:

- how much bandwidth is approx. needed for one session?

- is it fast enough for 'comfortable' working (office apps only)?

- how does printing affect the performance?

- pros/cons?

What is your experience?

Regards,

Lejf

it's always difficult to say. What else is going over the VPN's at the

time? Since you have no control over the internet the only way to know is

to test. I can say that people do this type of thing quite a bit, running

TS over the internet. So many variables make it difficult, if not

impossible, to determine this over a newsgroup. Do the admin thing and

test, test, test. then you'll know for sure.

Hi,

it absolutely depends on what applications you use, to be more precise how

often for example your screen changes and how often those applications have

to send back and forth date from client.

> - is it fast enough for 'comfortable' working (office apps only)?

For Office applications - if you optimize them for work on TS (check google

for how to d so) it is more the comfortable as long as you have anything on

about ISDN line (64 Kbiit/s) - thats real life exp.

> - how does printing affect the performance?

You decide so to say - you can prio the traffic - whethe for Display or

Printing in Windows 2008. Check the DISPLAY DATA prioritization setting. It

really is a good one. If your users are "Power Printer's" yet the want the

comfort you can set it the way that print jobs are a bit delayed yet they

feel great working, even or also over the Internet.

With Windows 2008 you can really do nothing wrong. I love it and have done

some really good implementations with it - and both on performance and

features is is top. You have to dig a wee bit on it but it is worth it.

Few Tipps for the Remote Locations.

- try to choose proper Display Depth

- Make sure that user if at all surf the Web vie TS, if they will do it via

Local PC's it will eat up the traffic

- Run TCP View on those hosts if the performance is back and check if some

other App's are consuming the traffic.

Good luck,
