Guest NatureMuzic Posted August 16, 2008 Posted August 16, 2008 Hi, All of a sudden, the CHKDSK for "Error Checking" starts arbitrarily & don't know why or how to fix it so it only checks when I manually ask it to, as I don'r like waiting 45 minutes when I first log in, unless I plan it that way. Any ideas are appreciated! Dallas

Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 Re: CHKDSK It may be running because the HardDrive is experiencing 'issues', too. NatureMuzic, suggest you run the HD diagnostic tool of the manufacturer of the drive to find out if this may be the case. Continually cancelling chkdsk in this situation may lead to a complete loss of data down the road. Guest MowGreen [MVP] Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Re: CHKDSK To identify the manufacturer of the HardDrive *right* click My Computer either on the Desktop or the Start Menu and choose Manage. Click the plus sign [expand] next to System Tools Now click on Device Manager in the left frame Expand Disk drives You'll now see the name of the manufacturer of the HD Use google to locate their web site and check under their Support link to see if they offer a diagnostic tool. What you saw may have been just a glitch but, you really should check out the health of the HD so that you don't lose needed/wanted data.
