Hi Steve

is the local disc c the ram

The two are often mixed up.

When you download anything or install a piece of software or save a photo these all end up on the hard disk ( hard drive ).

On small drives this is normally C:\ but bigger drives can be divided into partitions. The partitions will be allocated different letters.

Think of this as a filing cabinet. A small one has just one drawer a larger one can have lots of drawers - it is still just one filing cabinet.

RAM is not part of the hard drive. It is short-term memory that the processor uses. You have no access to this.

If you are getting a no disk space error your C:\ drive could well be almost full.

Start > Computer

How many drives are shown?

C:\ is one

D:\ is normally the DVD CDROM drive

E:\ ......................etc will probably be partitions on the hard drive ( unless you have a card reader / external drive / memory stick attached )

How much space do you have on C:\ ?

Start > Computer > right click on C:\ > Properties

What size is the drive and how much free space?

You only have 7% free - really you need twice this for Windows to function properly.

How big is E:\ and do you have anything on it ?

e: is dvd

d: local disc :- capacity 66 gb

used 17.4

free 149

Should this read 166Gb not 66Gb ?

You may be able to expand C:\ into D:\ and gain some space if you want to give this a try.

Can you copy what is on D:\ to an external drive or DVD ?

What we need to is to move all of the data from D:\ ............then delete D:\ ................. Claim some or all of the empty space for C:\ ................ recreate what is left ( if you want a separate partition ) into a smaller D:\

This is not as difficult as it sounds - but you must take off D:\ what you need first.

Hi Steve,

I have closed the other thread and we will continue in this one please.

The purpose of merging to two partitions is so that you do not need to do anything as drastic as reverting to factory settings.

If you do this you will lose all of the data on C:\ drive.

You will lose any software that you have installed.

You will lose all of the security updates.

This really should be a last resort.

We can merge the two partitions so that you have one large partition if you wish.

This will give you plenty of space.

We are working on Win7 as it says in your details ??

Which way do you wish to go ?

I understand now. :)

it says the disc was'nt big enough

You will need a few DVDs and you will need to select what you want to transfer.

Another option is to buy an external hard drive.

Let me know when you are ready to recover the drive. ( I am away for 3 days from tomorrow )
