Cannot change display settings on Win2003Srv

Power (230V) down during a thunderstorm.

2003 server machines power supply damaged.

Rreplaced it and rebooted machine (first time in >3 years).

Noticed that display settings were down to SVGA (800 x 600) and could not

bee changed.

Replaced video card (same model) and rebooted. No success.

Settings dialog will accept moving the slider to a higher res (e.g. 1024 x

768) but the screen stays att 800 x 600. Same thing with screen saver and

energy saving options. Dialogs accepts new option but no change in machine

behavior. When coming back to dialog the previous values/options are still

there?!?

Other than this 2003 server works like before.

Up time is business critical so I'd rather avoid reinstalling OS and several

applications.

I assume some file(s) are corrupt. Anyway, that's how it appears to me.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction with regards to extracting

& replacing file(s) from the CD in order to avoid a full reinstall?

/Anthony H

I'd try removing the device from Device Manager, then after restart when the

add new hardware wizard starts feed it the latest manufacturer's driver

downloaded from their web site.

Re: Cannot change display settings on Win2003Srv

Thans Dave,

but I've already tried that - with latest AND previous drivers.

Also, the screen saver & energy saving options will not respond to changes

even in Std VGA mode. So I'm pretty sure it isn't a video card driver issue.

Any error codes in device manager? Event Viewer errors?

Re: Cannot change display settings on Win2003Srv

Hello Dave,

no there are no useful hints (codes, dimmed entries etc.) shown anywhere.

However, the problem appears to be solved after a reinstall (upgrade option).

Could do this during sunday afternoon (very few users then).

Sorry I had to "shortcut" matters, otherwise this thread could perhaps have

been beneficial to others experiencing similar problems.

Thanks for your time on this one.

All the best,

Ton

Re: Cannot change display settings on Win2003Srv

Glad to hear its sorted. I was thinking the next step might have been a

parallel install to prove the hardware. (assuming a spare partition was

available) Then finally a repair install as you did.
