Get Everest, http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Run it and find out what hardware you have installed and all kinds of other

neat things. Of course, if your machine has a brand and model number, it

*may* make things a lot easier, but then again, it may not, depending on the

brand.

By detault Windows stores SNDVOL32.CNT in \Windows\Help.

The Systray volume control is toggled on/off in

/ Control Panel / Multimedia.

Re: volume control program

Does the computer have the installation files from the CD, on the hard drive? Many

manufacturers included the Win98 installation files (which include a large number of

..cab files) in this folder tree:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

First, click Start> Settings> Folder Options> View tab, and click to enable "Show

All Files" and click OK.

Now look for that folder tree and let us know if the location exists on your

computer, and if it contains a large number of .cab files.

Re: volume control program

Is the sound device internal? You could always pick up a cheap Creative

Sound Blaster after Glen and others help you get rid of the error message(s).

Since you don't seem to have seen my earlier reply, I will repeat:

included the Win98 installation files (which include a large number of .cab files)

in this folder tree:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

First, click Start> Settings> Folder Options> View tab, and click to enable "Show

Re: volume control program

That's because the required Windows Component named "Volume Control" needs

to be installed or uninstalled/reinstalled. (Start>Settings>Control

Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup tab>Multimedia>Details button. It's

at the bottom of the list.

FACT: You cannot decently maintain a Windows OS without the installation

files. Suggest you get a set. If you don't have the disk, use Find>Files &

Folders to search for files named WIN98*.CAB and see if several dozen don't

show up. If they do, the folder they are in is your Windows installation

source and you should make a CD copy or two of that folder in case you ever

need to reinstall the system (presuming it includes Setup.exe, which, if

there are dozens of CAB files, is pretty likely.)

If you need/want to buy a copy: http://tinyurl.com/68yv53 (That's an EBay

list of results.)

You might also want to download BootIt NG from

http://bootitng.com/bootit-next-generation.htm, run the EXE to create a

floppy installation disk (or CD ISO to create a CD version), boot to the

installation disk, let it load, but CANCEL at the installation prompt. That

will drop you Maintenance Mode where you can click on Partition Work. Look

at the display of your HD's partitions. What's listed there. Perhaps a

hidden Restore partition or two?

And just what make/model is that machine, anyway? Or the motherboard model

number if yours is a "whitebox".

Re: volume control program

I am sure Gary would be willing to provide you with a Windows 98 Second

Edition cd because Gary was going to give one to slow"fast"15 poster but

he/she was really rude and so I doubt Gary will provide it to that person

now. Unfortunately, I am using all my copies of 98 Second Edition, otherwise

I would provide you with one myself. In addition, Ebay has legal full retail

copies of 98 Second Edition for about $50-$75 which is not bad for the price

of even a legacy os in my opinion. I do not see how we can easily fix your

pc without a copy of 98 SE on cd.

What ARE you talking about and why are you SHOUTING?!? You are absolutely

wrong about the use of sarcasm, but I don't see where it entered this thread

at all except via Dan's perpetually OT and usually psychotic blather. In

this particular case, his story about me is pure BS. I can't afford to give

away copies of Windows, they're too expensive. And I don't engage in piracy.

THAT thread was pure sarcasm, and the idiotic, downright *stupid* OP

deserved every bit of it.

What, I don't get thanks for my EBay list?
