Hi All,

Occasionally when viewing some images the background of the graphic breaks up into a regular pattern of dashes.

This is very noticeable with the AVS suite of programmes opening index. I've asked AVS but they can not help. I've changed video boards and now upgraded to a Nvidia 8400GS on my old Dell Dimension 2400. Problem still exists.

Screenshot attached.

Hi and welcome to ExTS

Initially I would have thought "Video card" - but you have swapped this.

Start > type in ....devmgmt.msc.......ENTER

Click the + next to Display Adapters

What is listed?

If there is anything other than your present card > right click > Disable.

Leave only your present card enabled.

================

When you have the dashes on screen ........if you move the monitor cable do they change?

Hi KenB,

Thanks for your interest.

Had a look at the device manager. I disabled the 'on board' adapter when I added the new one.

Had a 'fiddle' with the monitor lead, no change in the display.

When I 'mouse over' the problem image some of the lines disappear. Can this be a problem with 'roll over' or links to other pages or sections?

Thanks for your help

Hi again

I have not seen anything like this before. Coloured bands - yes ....but not dashes ??????

Right click on the Adapter in Device manager and select "Update Driver"

Make sure you have an internet connection and let it do the Auto-search.

This is not likely to fix it as you get the same condition with 2 cards.

If this fails - enable the onboard video and disable the Video card.

You will obviously have to move the connection to the onboard socket.

Do you get the same condition using this?

Hi KenB,

Driver has been updated in last few days with latest from Nvidia. (285.58) I did 'roll back the driver to see if that would make any difference but no change.

I'll have a change around of the adapters to the 'on board' one in the morning when I'm a little more awake!

I'll let you know the outcome.

Thanks for your help.

I am away for 3 days .......will pick this up then if others do not contribute.

If it is OK with onboard but not with the video cards then it is Motherboard related.

Hi KenB,

Seem to have 'sorted out' the log-in problem and now can reply to the Forum.

Swapped over from the video adapter to the 'on board' chip, no change sadly. I got into a bit of a mess with the order of operations! I should have enabled the 'on board' first via the device manager. Now back with the Nvida board.

While I had the box on the bench I had a look at the RAM and matched up a couple of Crucial 512Mb instead of a mixed pair, just in case something was happening there.

I do a large amount of editing via Photoshop and have no problems with any of my images before or after editing.

The top section of the Photoshop workspace does show some problems though. A slight break-up of the background. The problem seems to be to do with some applications and how they are displayed by whatever they use in the software.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,

Glad to hear that you sorted the posting problem.

If you get the same results with on-board and a video-card it does look as if it is software.

What is strange is that it is just "some images".

Start > Run .....type in ....dxdiag .......ENTER ( for XP it may be dxdiag.exe )

Which version of DirectX are you using?

Click the "Display" option.

Are all of the options enabled?

Does it show any problems listed in the box?

This may help

Having read through this thread twice, two things come to mind, both security related.

Some security products can cause some very strange problems for some folks and not others and for various reasons, so can you tell us what you have installed in antivirus, firewall, antimallware, and especially if you have Rapporte on.

Secondly, it could actually be a virus or malware causing this problem.

Let us know what security you have first before we go further on that question.

Image Display Problems

Hi Both,

Have run the dxdiag and no problems are shown with missing files. Present security is AVG and has been so for many years. I can try with AVG disabled if requested. I run AVG daily and CC Cleaner every week also AVS registry cleaner on a weekly basis. I try to keep everything up to date and no rubbish lying around! IE and Outlook Express for everything and Java 6, Update 26. No extra browsers used. Tried Chrome but didn't like it at all.

Thanks for your interest.

We don't advise registry cleaners - they do more harm than good.

If this is a recent problem it may be worth trying System Restore to a date just prior to the start of the problem.

For XP ......Start > Run ....type in .....msconfig....Click on "Launch System Restore".

Data, photos. files etc will be fine.

If this doesn't sort it....

Download MBAM from here: Click on Products > you want the free version

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Install > Update > Run

If it finds anything post the log here please.

Hi KenB,

Back again! I downloaded the Malware application and have run it twice. First a quick scan then the long one (3 hours).

The first scan identified 40 odd files and I elected to remove these. The later scan shows system is now 'all clear'.

I've had a look at he problem image and sorry to say there is no change. I had a major clear out this Summer and scrapped all the old System Restore points and only kept the last one when I was happy about the performance at that point in time.

I had thought to start a folder and to copy over any image that has the bar effect. When I have a few examples perhaps I might find some common link between the images or their backgrounds. Just a thought. Anyway the problem does not affect production so no real worry.

Thanks again for looking and suggesting solutions.

Regards

What you have copied is only half the log.

Please open MBAM > Logs and locate the quick scan that came up with the 40 problems.

Copy the complete log and post it here.

(at the bottom there should be an explanation as to what has been found / removed )

I will ask one of the security experts to take a look and see if there was anything that needs further investigation.

Image Break_up Problems

Hi KenB,

Back to being able to log in again, don't know what causes that though. Same problem as last time. I get thanked for logging in then sent to a page to log in again.......and again.......and so on!

Sorry, don't have the logs anymore. I did a crop of the image to save web space as it was a fairly long text file. How would you like text files presented, are they all right as an attachment?

Yesterday was one of my major clear out days. I remove all my image files and text files to portable drives then have a massive clearout! I delete all that I don't want anymore, then run CC Cleaner, Wipe Free Space and Defrag. I then create a new restore point. I bring back some of the image files that I'm still working on the others go to my archive. I generally do this every month end and this seems to help with keeping Photoshop running well, as I do use it nearly every day for image editing.

I will collect any 'dodgy-looking' images in a folder and let you know if I can find a common theme. Thanks again for your help, sorry to have destroyed the evidence!

Regards

Hi, just to put your mind at rest, it is OK to copy and paste entire logs, it doesn't matter too much about page size taken up. It is the information on the log that can be important.

Have a look at the logs posted in our malware and security section to see what a long log can look like. Yet all that information is vital to our security experts.

Although Ken has mentioned we do not support registry cleaners, I support that as we have seen too many problems that were caused just by using them. I urge you to read this article by Ed Bott on this link here=

Hi Llanfallteg

Carmarthenshire, South West Wales

Not too far from me at the moment.

I'm spending Christmas with family in 'Neath'.

It would really help to throw some light on all this if we knew what MBAM removed.

Start Malwarebytes AntiMalware.

Click on the logs tab.

The logs are date stamped ... double click on the log that showed the infection items.

It'll open in notepad.

Please copy/paste the report in your next reply.

I'll keep them next time, promise.

Not a lot of help next time i'm afraid.

With that many ifected items things should have been addressed.

Without knowing what those items were is like guessing in the dark now.

Malware

Hi Starbuck,

I do have another two PC's attached to my network. I've run the Malwarebytes application on an old Dell 2300. The text file is attached. Only one hit though. The item looks similar to the ones on the erased log.

The other machine is a Evesham P30 or EV1159 and that is on XP as well. I'll run the Malwarebytes on that as well and send you a log file, later today.

Splash Screen background break-up

Hi All,

Recently purchased a new panasonic camera. Image editing software came with camera and splash screen shows same background problem.

Don't know how this type of of image is constructed or what I'm missing in my operating system to achieve this result.

Any ideas anyone.

Before starbuck takes a look at your logs .............

Start > Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot

Take the Hardware Accelleration back to the left side.

Do you still get the same problem?

If not - move it to the right a couple of notches.

Try again until you get the optimum setting.

Hi KenB,

Moved the control to the center in stages. At the middle point the splash screen is corrected. The panel says.... [Disable all Direct Draw and Direct3D accelerations as well as cursor and advanced drawing accelerations. Use this setting to correct severe problems with DirectX accelerated applications.]

Can't add any more images as I've reached my quota it seems.

If I delete items in my attachments folder to make space do they disappear from the connected posts?

A light at the end of the tunnel possibly?

Do the dashes disappear from all of the programs you were having problems with?

Disable all Direct Draw and Direct3D accelerations

Are you getting this message appear at the mid-point?
