Recently my internet access has started to play up, using IE8 sometimes a page will take several minutes to load then often it will not load everything. Speedtest suggests my download speed is 3Mb/S which is as good as I've ever had, I've tried resetting IE8 and disabling add-ons etc but still no joy. Any ideas? XP Pro with SP3 on a Lenovo 3000 intel dual core.

I have my suspisions that windows is not entirely healthy and was wondering about using XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option. However the laptop didn't come with a CD as it has a recovery partition on the hard drive. This is fine for a total factory restore but I don't want to go through all the re-installation of everything else as well. Can I use another XP Pro SP3 cd I have to do the repair?

Many thanks as usual for any advise.

Hi Bob,

Is this just IE8 ?

Have you tried another browser?

You should have a second browser on the system for situations like this.

Try SR-Iron

http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_download.php

Or one of the other free options.

You could try uninstalling IE8. You will revert to an earlier version of IE.

If this is OK you could then re-install.

To uninstall IE8 you should be able to do this from Add / Remove in Control Panel

You will need to restart.

There is an email going around offering processed pork - gelatin - and salt in a can ......this is simply SPAM !!

Hi Ken,

thanks for your reply, I have a feeling that the issue is not unique to IE8 as I also have Chrome installed and have noticed the problem albeit less severe with this. I may just uninstalla nd reintall IE8 anyway to at least eliminate this as a potential issue.

OK an update on what's going on. I tried to uninstall IE8 but it wouldn't do it just seemed to freeze up. I figured maybe some kind of infection so ran a full scan with MSSE, MBAM, and trend housecall on-line scanners. Nothing reported on any of them. Finally I tries to Run ESET on-line scanner, it got to about 7% and just froze. After a bit more searching, the net (on another machine) I discovered others are having the same issues as me after installing a "ClickFree Wireless backup device". I installed one of these last week and since then I've had this problem, also the ClickFree doesn't work and refuses to play despite following all the faultfinding stuff in the manual. So I thought, just uninstall it and try again but I couldn't find any way to do that. No bother I thought I'll do a system restore. I tried 6 dates that were prior to installing the Clickfree, none of them worked. Finally I tried system restore in "Safe Mode" and managed to get everything back to 9th December. Clickfree has gone and things appear to be back to normal. Now running ESET on-line again just in case. Damn shame if it does turn out to be the ClickFree thing as I thought I'd found an ideal solution to automatic backup.

Well it looks like ClickFree was the cause. After the restore I tried to re-install the device. It did install ok and carried out it's first backup but failed to connect to the wireless network. 2 hours on the phone to their tech support and still no joy. It's going back for a refund as soon as I can arrange it. Of course it has meant another system restore which again would only work in "Safe Mode" not sure why that is but at least it's back to normal now. Thanks for your advise.

Bob.

P.S. can you mark the thread solved?

Thanks for the update Bob about re trying the clickFree thing, I hope you get a refund of your costs, and this will serve as some use for anyone else having problems with that hardware and associated software.
