Hi!

I have an HP laptop and the screen has gone kaput on it, so I'm using an external monitor. I'm unable to get into BIOS or the system restore because the external only kicks on once Windows has started. I've tried using the function+F4 button to switch to it, but it doesn't work.

I've also tried uninstalling the laptop monitor driver and setting the external as the main display, but it isn't working either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

Hello and welcome...

The usual process to transfer the video output to an external source is to hold down the fn key and press f4. Use the arrow keys to select 'Projector Only' and hit enter.

I try this as the computer loads and it won't allow me to view anything on the external monitor until Windows boots, so I'm unable to get into BIOS. I've tried putting the settings at mirrored display and explay on the external only, but neither work.

I've done that, also. I've also tried uninstalling the driver for the laptop monitor so that the external is the only one the computer recognises, but that didn't work either.

You need to update the drivers...

Depending what graphics card you have installed you also need to install the software,if its a NVIDIA card you need NVIDIA control panel,if its ATI you need catalyst....You use the software in conjuntion with windows display.....Have you done this?

In fact this might be an impossible task as things now stand, that is because the BIOS itself may need to be configured to look for and use the external monitor.

However because you can't see the BIOS screen due to the malfunctioning laptop monitor, I can't see a way round it.

The only answer is to get the laptop monitor repaired I am afraid.
