Hello,

My daughter was playing the Sims game on her Laptop computer HP with Windows

XP.

The game minimized and left a white line going across the top of her screen.

She tried to restart her computer, change the desktop settings along with

the background settings and still contiunes to have this thin white line

going across her screen .

Any suggestions?

I would boot the computer with any bootable rescue CD like a Bart's PE or

preferably Knoppix. I say that Knoppix is preferable in this situation

because it runs Linux (from the CD, won't touch your XP install) and

creates a full graphical operating system. If the white line remains then

this is a hardware fault, probably the graphics chip. If this is the case,

there's nothing you can do about it except to contact HP tech support for

repair/replacement.

To get Knoppix, you need a computer with a fast Internet connection and

third-party burning software. Download the Knoppix .iso and create your

bootable cd by burning as an image, not as data. You may need to change

your boot priority in the BIOS (or use a temporary boot order keypress if

available) to have the machine boot from the CD drive first.

Another alternative is to see if the white line exists when you first boot

up the computer, except that since the full graphics capability of the

video chip aren't being used at that point this isn't definitive.

Those are just reviews, not links to downloads as far as I can see. Use the

link I gave you - http://www.knoppix.net. Download the CD .iso for the

latest version in whatever language you want. EN is English. You can

download from FTP mirrors or BitTorrent it. Choose the mirror and method

that suits you.
