Jelly Bean Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Hello and welcome... This is a old mainboard, surely money would be better spent on a new mainboard and CPU? Quote Rwy'n ceisio fy ngorau......................
KenB Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 If, by upgrading the processor, you are trying to make the system faster .............you would be better adding more RAM. If this is your motherboard http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=141 It supports up to 2GB RAM. XP runs very well with 1GB. Elcey Posted December 26, 2011 Author Posted December 26, 2011 That is my motherboard , Also ive got 1.4GB ram currently in my PC , 1GIG Stick and then a 512MB Stick , Processor is currently 1.8GHZ , Would it probably be better for me to buy anouther 1GIG Stick? Would that make it more faster ? Quote
KenB Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 If you have 1.5GB RAM adding any more will not make a significant difference. Has your system slowed down recently? It is XP ? 32 Bit? You could probably benefit from a clean-up and defragmentation of the hard drive. Plastic Nev Posted December 26, 2011 Posted December 26, 2011 Hi, if it is a problem due to download speeds it could be your connection at fault rather than anything in the computer. Get a speed test from here= http://www.speedtest.net/ Let us know the result of download speed, upload speed and most importantly the ping test result. Nev. Plastic Nev Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Hi, that is not very good, it may be OK at that time of day for most downloads such as Youtube video, but at times of net congestion during UK and European daytime, you will possibly see much lower figures, resulting in stop and go on Video downloads and slow speeds for file downloads. Although I see Virgin is the ISP, I assume it is provided by the ordinary telephone network which will be the reason. If I am wrong and you are on Virgin cable, then you should see much higher speeds than those, so a complaint to them would be in order. I am also on the telephone network and a reasonable distance from the exchange, therefore see a similar figure for speeds, but I accept the problems with the telephone line system as I have no cable. KenB Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Just to throw a spanner into the works :) I have slightly better d/l speed 12Mb/s but poorer upload. ( wireless laptop ) I don't have too many problems with YouTube Although as Nev says, if you are paying for 20Mb/s then a call to your ISP to ask for an explanation is in order. Be prepared for a stock list of excuses. Try taking the 512MB module out and run on 1GB. Swap them over if no improvement. Put both back if no improvement. Jelly Bean Posted December 27, 2011 Posted December 27, 2011 Can I add that my internet speed with BT is usaly only half a meg,if I am lucky I will get 1 n half meg on the rare occassion and I have no issues with YouTube but I am running 4 gig DDR2....... Plastic Nev Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 I suspect it is my ISP/BT throttling things down during busy periods. I have 4GB DDR3, but sometimes see speeds as low as 80 KB. Doesn't matter who the service provider is though, if using the telephone network, every one I speak to in this town says it's the same or similar, so must be our local exchange needs an upgrade. I could go to cable. It is in the street, but for the use I need, I refuse to pay the extra for that service. Nev. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
