VIRUS CREATED PROBLEMS

I was infected with a virus. It has since been removed. However, my desktop

now acts different. The start button bottom left no longer has programs or

log off tabs. My computer no longer lists "C" drive. I now have a white box

in the upper left of the desktop that appears to be a list of my network

places. Although I am listed as the Administrator, I cannot access the

properties of the desktop. I get a message that states that the administrator

has restricted access. I can set up another user and assign it as

administrator. However, my current user has lists and links(E-mail ) etc that

I do not want to take the time to recreate. Is there a way to set up a new

user and copy the preference etc from an old user. I am at a loss.

You may experiencing a profile corruption due to the infection, try to

create a new profile (as

Admin) and copy the data from one of this profile to the new and test to see

if it will work.

If it did work then you know it is a profile corruption, after making sure

you copied all the Data from the Old Profile to the new one, you can safely

delete the old corrupted one, the same with other account.

Are you sure you removed the Virus from the Machine?

You may not have removed the virus infection completely from your system.

Do this:

Download/execute David H. Lipman's MULTI_AV Tool

http://www.pctipp.ch/ds/28400/28470/Multi_AV.exe

http://www.pctipp.ch/downloads/dl/35905.asp

English:

http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008/01/09/scan-your-computer-with-multiple-anti-virus-for-free/

Additional Instructions:

http://pcdid.com/Multi_AV.htm

--and/or--

Kaspersky's AVPTool

http://downloads5.kaspersky-labs.com/devbuilds/AVPTool/

There's no updating involved since the scanning engine is updated

several times a day and you simply download the updated scanner whenever

you want to do a scan.

--and/or--

Dr.Web CureIt!® Utility - FREE

http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/

--and/or--

Malwarebytes© Corporation - Anti-Malware

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/program/mbam-setup.exe

Then do this:

Download and execute HiJack This! (HJT)

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

Please, do not post HJT logs to this newsgroup.

Fora where you can get expert advice for HiJack This! (HJT) logs.

NOTE: Registration is required in any of the below fora before posting

a HJT log and read the 'stickies' (instructions/guidelines) for

the respective HJT forum.

When malicious software attacks your machine, when you think you've

cleaned it, there is no real way to tell for sure, and that means that

you could still be infected.

Malware removal is a crap-shoot at best. Yes, many products claim to be

able to fix/clean your machine, but, do you really know for sure that

it's clean.

At best, you "assume" that it's clean and don't find/see any visible

signs of malware remaining. At worst, the cleaner(s) tell you your

machine is clean and you still see visible signs that it's not clean.

There are also many times that cleaning malware will also break things

on your computer, desktop, applications, etc....

Your best bet is to clean the machine with an couple anti-malware tools,

then, once it claims to be clean, backup your documents and pictures to

DVD or other, then wipe the computer and rebuild it from scratch, on a

wiped drive, behind a NAT router. During the rebuild DO NOT USE THE

INTERNET EXCEPT TO GET MS UPDATES. Don't browse to any other websites

while building the system.

While one can remove a virus, no program will or can repair the damage

it may cuase. Best bet in the future is NOT to download or install a

virus.

Is it "cuase" or "cause"? A spelling checking is a wonderful thing.

true, I got that "problem" where I switch letters/numbers, always forget

what it's called :)

Oddly, it looks perfectly fine when I write it...
