Guest Ron Kirschner Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Since installing SP3 last week - Outlook Express keeps on asking about compacting my messages over and over while OE is open. Is this a known problem?

Is this a known > problem? The problem is the registry counter that gives you the prompt after 100 closings of OE is being increased quicker than it should. There is a growing number of programs that may be causing this after installing SP3. Do you have any of the following? IBM Rapid Access keyboard. Windows Desktop Search Window Live Mail Mailwasher. Nero. Various anti-virus, anti-spyware and third party firewalls, especially if they were running when you installed SP3. You could also download RegMon: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896652.aspx. Run the program and monitor the Compact Count Check registry value by filtering on: Compact Count Check. This should identify the program that is causing the rapid increase in the Compact Check Count registry value. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA

With XP SP3 if OE is Closed and you open an EML file in OE (e.g. double click it or right click and open with OE) when you close the EML file, the OE compact count is incremented. In SP2, that did not happen. So something has changed in the OE logic. Under SP3, If OE is open, you can then open and close EML files all you want and the compact count is NOT incremented.
