printer usb port not working (the specified port is unknown)

My laptop doesn't recognize my printer via the usb ports. I was trying to

install a printer and i changed something about the ports in the device

managger (i dont remember what) and after that I've been unable to use the

usb port for printing purpose. but they still work for the other devices

(scanner, external HD, etc). I uninstalled all the printers and try to

reinstall my hp laserjet 1018 but at the end of the process it state " an

error ocurred during the instalation of the device. The specified port is

unknown".

Unfortunately we don't know what you changed in Device Manager either. In

the future when you make changes to your system I suggest you document them.

To fix your problem run system restore and roll back to a date before the

problem began.

Disconnect the printer and uninstall the HP printer drivers.

 

Then, install the drivers and only re-connect the printer when the

software install request you to re-connect the printer.

 

Most USB printers require the drivers to be installed onto the XP

before you connect the printer to. These install specialised printer

ports like DOT?_USB forthe advanced printer features.

hi, if i make the restore procedure, what effects it might have in other

aspects of the computer? would it be risky? i´m worried about this because

the problem has at least 6 month.
