Guest michael with the reinstall Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 I am trying to reintall Windows XP from the manufacture CD and several files are not installing from the CD mostly .inf files. The error message said "cannot copy this file from CD makes sure CD is inserted into the drive. Try again. After several failed attempts I skipped over the files. After the install I cannot change my monitor type or install the drivers for the monitor. I suspect the files that did not copy from the CD have a lot to do with the inablility to change the Display settings under properties.
Guest David B. Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Re: installation problems with Windows XP What was the reason for the reinstallation? File copy errors during setup are usually caused by dirty or scratched installation media, a bad CD drive, bad or incompatible RAM, or a defective hard drive. Skipping any files that can't be copied will usually end up in a lame or non functioning operating system. -- ---- Crosspost, do not multipost http://www.blakjak.demon.co.uk/mul_crss.htm How to ask a question http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555375 "michael with the reinstall" <michael with the reinstall@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:870B7B93-0953-40C0-9915-222506ED25EA@microsoft.com... >I am trying to reintall Windows XP from the manufacture CD and several >files > are not installing from the CD mostly .inf files. Hi Michael, This can be the cause of the following: 1- Bad RAM 2- Bad CD-ROM 3- HDD going bad 4- Overclocking CPU 5- Virus still on the Boot sector playing up on SetUp 6- The Connector (IDE Data Cable ribbon ) Not connecting properly to the HDD or the Motherboard 7- The Motherboard or the system Overheated and lots of Dust accumulated inside So try to use another XP CD installation if it is available it could be a media installation CD dirty or damaged. Did you deleted the Partition(s) and created new one(s) and formated them on the new installation? For how-to hints: http://www.google.com/search?q=clean+cd&btnG=Search&hl=en&sa=2 If you remember the file names, put the CD in another computer and see if you can open the files with Notepad. If the CD is damaged, you'll have to get a new one from "the manufacture". Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation (even a Repair installation) are most often caused by defective, incompatible, or sub-standard hardware; in order of likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On very rare occasions the CD drive or installation CD is the problem. Start with testing the RAM. You might try MemTest86: http://www.memtest86.com/ It's free. Then you can download and use the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility to test the hard drive. If both RAM and hard drive test out clean, check with the motherboard manufacturer for any diagnostic utilities. -- Bruce Chambers Help us help you: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/555375 They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. ~Benjamin Franklin Many people would rather die than think; in fact, most do. ~Bertrand Russell The philosopher has never killed any priests, whereas the priest has killed a great many philosophers. ~ Denis Diderot
