Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Re: windows activation limit reached It's free, but I don't believe they give you a new code, they just reset the count on your current code. How many times HAVE you reinstalled Windows? How long have you had it? -- Gary S. Wan't XP supposed to be forever installable on the same PC hardware?
Guest Gary S. Terhune Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Re: windows activation limit reached Not in all cases. MSDN versions of Windows XP can be installed a number of times on different hardware but there is a limit (within a certain time frame) after which you must call in and explain your case satisfactorily before they will reset the count. I have no idea what the OP is doing, how many times he's reinstalled, how much he's changed the hardware, what version of installation media he's using, or what the rest of the story is. But in fact, no, I don't believe you can Activate Windows on the same machine too many times in too short a timeframe without Activation taking notice. I might be wrong, but that's my understanding. Maybe there are such restrictions that apply only to OEM or System Builder versions, I don't know. I just DO know that MSDN versions have Activation counters, because that's what I mostly use. I've never actually hit the limit, but it's made plain to subscribers that various OSes and Applications have various limits to how many machines you can install them on to within some unknown period of time. I also don't know if the OP or his machine is/was part of a Volume Licensing/Multiple Activation Key scheme where, again, I'm fairly certain the number of times an Activation Key is used is kept track of. If so, I was probably wrong and he probably DOES need a new code, or the machine came from a business that had such a scheme and he has no license to use it in the first place, and which case, no, it won't be free. In fact, it won't be anything except go buy a retail copy. -- Gary S.
