c:000021a fatal system error.

status of oxc0000005(0x00000000 0x00000000

Hi and welcome.

Fatal System Error - not a good sign.

You may need to buy a USB Dvd drive - similar to ones shown here.

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/external-drives/714_7571_70704_xx_xx/xx-criteria.html

Run a Hard drive manufacturers test.

You may be able to Slave the Hard Drive drive and remove all needed files, data etc.

How to use Linux live Cd to backup files from a dead Pc

This may or not work.

Reboot - tap F8

Choose.

Safe mode with command prompt..

Log on as administrator.

Type.

%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

This should launch System Restore.

Choose a date prior to the problem.

Hi Bluesplayer, thanks for your reply,

The problem I have is , my computer bios does not have boot from usb option.

My cd/dvd drive will not read any discs, I think it has lost the drivers.

I have a recovery disc that came with the computer, but I cannot use the cd/dvd player.

I have tried to boot up in safe mode , but I get the same fatal error message, and system shuts down.

Is there any way that you can make it boot from a usb stick, or is it a case of scrapping my laptop.

Eagerly await your response.

I cannot get into system at all to do any checks.

Cheers Bob

Hi Bob.

Finding the drivers for the Cd - would be an option but you need to start the notebook to install them.

Changing the hard drive would be an option - but you need the Cd drive to work to install an operating system.

If there is not an option in the Bios to boot from a USB stick - I am out of ideas - others here may come up with another way to help you.

Sorry.

Edit.

There may be a recovery partition - tapping an F number at start up.

But the hard drive seems to have died on you.

Worth checking - you may be able to recover files and data.

Let us have the model number etc.

Hi yes sorry about that

I have tapped every f number.

You say hard drive seems to have died , when I boot it goes as far as the xp screen with the blue bar, then error message comes up.

The make is packard bell easynote k5285.

Thanks again

Hi, it does indeed look like a hard drive problem now. most laptops there is a cover, usually at the edge underneath the laptop, remove the cover and the hard drive should pull out easy enough.

You will need then an enclosure or adapter to connect the drive to a USB port on a working computer, as per the link Bluesplayer gave earlier which mentions an enclosure, though you can get just adapter cables.

Once that is done, and providing the working computer recognises and can access what is on the suspect drive, you can save any data onto the working computer, and also we can ask you to run a few tests which will help determine if it is a faulty drive or operating system.

Once we have got that far, we will be better positioned as to what can be recommended next.

Hi Guys,

Have now got usb hard disc enclosure, have connected laptop hdd tp my desktop pc via usb.

Desktop pc reads laptop hdd perfectly, but I do not know what to do now to rectify the problem.

The enclosure came with a usb lead with one connecter to go to enclosure and two usb plugs on other end, one plugs into desktop usb.

Any advice please.

Hi,

The other guys may have different ideas but until they get to you.......

Connect the drive up to a working PC - use both of the USB connections as this will ensure that you get enough power to the enclosure.

Take a look in My Computer ( Computer for Vista / 7 ) and make a note of the letter that is allocated to the drive.

Let's say the letter is Z:\

Start > [ Run for XP ] type in .....cmd ...... if using XP hit ENTER ..............if Vista / 7 then do not hit ENTER

Vista / 7 right click on cmd.exe that appears at the top left of screen. Run as Administrator.

At the prompt ( XP / Vista / 7 ) type chkdsk z: /f /r .......................note the spaces before and after z: ...and substitute your drive letter where I have typed Z:

This will check the disk for file system errors and bad sectors and attempt a fix if problems are found.

This may take a long time to run through.

Hi Bob

You don't have many options left.

If the CDROM drive doesn't work and you don't have the option to boot from a USB device you are virtually dead in the water.

You say the CDROM drive is not working.

Was it not working before this problem arose - or just when you put the XP disk in ?

It could be a simple case of changing the boot order in the BIOS.

If it isn't working........

If you are prepared to replace the CDROM Drive you can, at least, have a go at re-installing the operating system.

Hi Ken

No Cd drive was not working before this problem,

I have tried to change the boot order, but made no difference,

You say try another drive, but I am a bit concerned that I cannot load the drivers for cddrive, as I cannot get into system?

I will replace if I can load drivers.

cheers
