I am trying to Reinstall XP, i cannot find the so called 386 Directory

(Folder) on my Hard Disk. This is an HP Pavillion desktop and XP came

preinstalled and i did not get a CD. I have the XP cd key. This desktop does

not have a floppy drive either so i cant make boot disk. Ive also tried

hitting f10 during boot up which shows as the key to enter recovery mode but

i just get beeping sound and every time I press it and it does nothing but

boot up as normal. How can i reinstall it.

Contact HP re how to reinstall throught your Recovery Partition.

If no results, get HP to send you OEM XP recovery disk, at a minimal cost.

Yes, you can use anyone's CD, provided that it is the same

type (OEM/Retail/Home/Professional) and the same language.

However, you might have a bit of a chore ahead of you when

attempting to locate the various motherboard-specific drivers.

Note also that all HP machines come with a recovery CD

that accesses a hidden restoration partition on your disk.

I have never seen one - have you? Furthermore I thought that

MS requires all vendors to include a means to reload Windows,

either by means of a WinXP installation CD or by providing

some factory restore mechanism.

Does the computer boot? Why are you trying to reinstall?

I have two that use a restore partition. The partitions aren't hidden and

don't require a recovery CD to access it. One one pressing F12 at the wrong

moment of the boot cycle is all that is required to overwrite the C:

partition with a fresh factory image of the hard disc (not even an 'Are you

Sure' to bar your way). My laptop does the same thing but at least it asks

for confirmation first.

Both machines give you a single opportunity to make a set of recovery disks.

However, I was less than impressed when attempting to use the desktop disks,

I got an error message telling me they were being used in the wrong machine

(and no, I didn't use the wrong set).

Re: Help Reinstalling XP with no CD

if you use the factory restore

feature then your disk will be

wiped clean and restored to

the original settings.

otherwise you should probably

go into safemode and restore

the system or

you can try to repair your

windows with the repair

installation feature or the

recovery console.

but you will need to borrow a

windows cd from somebody so

that we can help you.

Re: Help Reinstalling XP with no CD

Its just has too much stuff installed i just wan to clean it out. I just want

either a clean reinstall with only xp or a factory reinstall, either one will

be ok. The separate partition seems to either be corrupt or non existent

since it does not show.... if it was ever there.

And thank you all for the replies.

Re: Help Reinstalling XP with no CD

"Its just has too much stuff installed". Please give more detail?

What evidence of poor performance are you seeing?

What model HP do you have?
