Try a Repair Install if you have a real XP install disk (not a recovery disk from the laptop mftr.). You will need either a branded or generic OEM disk that matches the version installed (XP Home, Pro, MCE). http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm - Repair Install How-To If that doesn't work, retrieve any data that isn't backed up and restore to factory condition with whatever method provided by the laptop mftr. Saying "don't ask me to reformat" is useless if that is the only thing that will make your computer usable again. Of course it isn't desirable but Stuff Happens so it is necessary to Be Prepared (backups, images, etc.). As long as the hard drive is physically sound, it is completely possible to retrieve your data even if you can't enter Windows. Pull the hard drive and put it into an external enclosure and attach it to a working computer so you can copy the data off that way. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
