Hi everyone,

I am lacking in PC knowledge so please bare with me :-)

I was having problems with my PC (the screen was multi-coloured after closing down games e.g Steam) so I figured it was a problem with the graphics card and decided to clean it out (I thought it might be overheating). So, I hoovered out the inside but when I put back together I got a disk error message. After poking about inside and ensuring everything was plugged in correctly, I turned it back on and the error message was gone. I was able to start the computer with no problems.

Right - the problem I have now is that the computer won't pick up the keyboard (USB). The lights in the keyboard come on but I can't type anything and therefore cannot log in to my computer as it has a password. I have used a 2nd keyboard which also didn't work. I managed to get hold of a PS/2 to USB converter which also didn't work. The keyboard works fine in BIOS. It only seems to stop working once XP has loaded.

What do I do now? My other half has checked in the BIOS and he seems to think that everything is OK.

HI have you tried getting into safe mode? from start up tap the F8 key, select "safe mode" and click enter, does the keyboard work in safe mode?

If so we can possibly go from there.

If not let us know and we may have more to try.

Hi Nev,

I didn't manage to get in to safe mode using the USB keyboard but I have since tracked down an old PS/2 keyboard which works fine. How do I go about fixing the problem with the USB keyboard now that I can get in to the computer?

P.S I am having issues with the original problem (pixelated screen) so I am limited in what I can do until that's fixed. I've opened that problem as a new thread.
