Guest simonc Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I have a portable USB drive plugged in to the computer and I want to remove it. Despite having no applications open, when I go to the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select this drive a warning box comes up saying The device 'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later. Can anyone suggest what background programmes might be using the USB drive and preventing it being stopped? I already tried exiting a spyware filter but it didn't help. Grateful for ideas.

Something checking up file changes as well. But may be You're trying to unplug device too fast giving no time to OS to close file deskriptors... Guest Ken G. Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Re: Can't stop USB mass storage device I've had this problem also, and its not because I haven't given the OS time to do its thing. I can leave it for 3 or 4 minutes and get the same response. When I'm sure no "normal" application is using it, I just pull it out and so far I've had no data losses. "Michael A. Guest Rey Santos Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 RE: Can't stop USB mass storage device I have experienced InCD.exe preventing a USB device safely removed. This is the InCD software which enables you to drag files onto a CD-R directly from Windows Explorer, or to save onto CD directly from within applications like Microsoft Word, without using the CD Recording software that came with your CD-Writer (Nero). In Task Manager you can end the process and try to safely remove the usb drive. Just run it again if you need to use it. A third party software: USB Disk Ejector 1.1.2 http://www.brothersoft.com/usb-disk-ejector-70149.html -- Rey "simonc" wrote: > I have a portable USB drive plugged in to the computer and I want to remove > it. Check to be sure that System Restore hasn't been turned on. That happens all the time with USB external drives on my setup. -- Bob http://www.kanyak.com
Guest simonc Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Re: Can't stop USB mass storage device Thanks for this suggestion. I'll try turning off system restore for the drive in question next time I want to remove it.
