Guest Sandy Wood Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 We've run across an issue with non-admin users on Windows XP and USB devices. We've found that when we plug in, say a USB camera, install the software as an admin and then have the non-admin user login, the device works fine. We're getting calls now from users that after they power down and backup, they are being asked to install the software again. I'm wondering if anyone is seeing this behavoir. I've seen some posts out there that may offer some clues. Once post mentioned that maybe the non-admin user rebooted and then plugged the USB device into another USB port where it would be required to have the software installed again. It is inferred that is the user continues to use the same USB port, they won't be prompted to install the driver unless they move the device. Is this the normal behavior? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney

McCarty Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Re: USB behavior in Windows XP / Admin rights If the device in question is a USB1(.1) device or your computer has multiple Enhanced (USB 2.0) controllers/hubs. USB is internally routed based on the device's technology. Devices can be re-enumerated if they route to a different controller/hub than in a prior use ( different socket ). This creates a new instance of the device. Guest Sandy Wood Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Re: USB behavior in Windows XP / Admin rights All the USB ports on our systems are 2.0. Could plugging them into another port require the driver to be installed again? -- Sandy Wood Orange County District Attorney "R. Could plugging them into another >port require the driver to be installed again? Yes, that's not unusual behavior. If the USB device is always plugged into the same port and never changes, you'll not likely see any messages about the driver. - Thee Chicago Wolf

It depends on the USB device having an USB hardware serial number or not. See here for more information: http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html#serial Uwe
