"Open with" window reappears without the program

Recommended Posts

When using Explore, I went to a folder with animations and right clicked on

a gif file and chose "Open with", but it didn't show the program I wanted to

use (Ulead GIF Animator).

So I used Browse and found the executable & chose it; but, when I did that,

all that happened was that the "Open with" window reappeared without the

Ulead GIF Animator as a choice.

What gives?

RE: "Open with" window reappears without the program

In the "Open with" box after browsing to the program check the box that says

"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"

I browse on mine and the program is located at Program files/Ulead

Systems/Ulead PhotoImpact/AnyGif/ga_main.exe

Rey,

"Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"<

Yes, I also find ga_main.exe, but

>the "Open with" box after browsing to the program check the box<

after I browse to the program ( ga_main.exe) and click "open", the window

disappears and I'm back to the original "Open with" box without GIF Animator

(ga_main.exe) included/available.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Try using the file properties box. Rightclick on the .gif file, choose

Properties, on the Properties box "Open with:" (note the program that

presently opens the type of file), click the Change ... button if its not

Ulead GIF Animator, browse to ga_main.exe, click open.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Rey,

That sounded good. Unfortunately, no cigar -- same results.

When I click Change, it takes me to the "Open with" window and I need to

browse to the program; so, clicking Browse opens up a different "Open with"

window which is full of folders and I browse to ga_main.exe and click

"open".

The window disappears and I'm back to the original "Open with" box without

GIF Animator (ga_main.exe) included/available.

This is actually the same sequence as before, except this time I started

with the Properties box.

Very frustrating.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Have you tried changing file association? Control panel--folder

options--file types---scroll down to .GIf and highlite it.

You can choose what program to use to open GIF files.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Let see what's in your registry.

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Aplications\ga_main.exe\open\command.

On the right pane, double click the (Default) under the Name column.

On the Edit String box the Value Data in my system is

C:\PROGRA~1\ULEADS~1\ULEADP~1\AnyGif\ga_main.exe "%1" . This points to the

location of the program at Program files/Ulead Systems/Ulead

PhotoImpact/AnyGif/ga_main.exe.

On some cases this problem happened because the registry entry is not

pointing to the program but to a previuos installation of the program. You

may have to edit the path pointing to the program in your system.

Unfortunately, this actually winds up going thru the same sequence of

windows with the same results.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Rey,

This seemed like it should work. I tried several variations, but still no

cigar.

This is my last variation, which is the actual path:

"C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\PhotoImpact 8\AnyGif\ga_main.exe" "%1"

I tried with the quotes and w/o the quotes. I tried the short version.

I tried using Photo Impact's string ("C:\Program

Files\Ulead\PhotoImpact\Iedit.exe" "%1") but changed to ("C:\Program

Files\Ulead\PhotoImpact\AnyGif\ga_main.exe" "%1").

I don't get it.

Using Explore, I would like to be able to open GIFs with ga_main.exe on

occasion, not make it "Always use the selected program to open this type of

file". However, currently I can't implement either option. Frustrating.

On some cases this problem happened because the registry entry is not

pointing to the program but to a previuos installation of the program. You

may have to edit the path pointing to the program in your system.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

The strange thing is -- when checking the Registry, the command line hasn't

changed ("C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead PhotoImpact

8\AnyGif\ga_main.exe" "%1") -- it's still the same as how I left it.

Re: "Open with" window reappears without the program

Just wished to add my thanks to Ramesh for tis little utility.

Having upgraded PhotoImpression several times, I was tearing my hair out

trying to get the PC to open with the latest version, which was being ignored.

Excellent.

Thanks!
