Once the hard drive is fitted to the enclosure, then plugged into her computer, providing that the drive then shows up and can be accessed on your mothers computer. Then before doing anything else, and just to reassure her, you should then be able to direct her anti-virus to scan your drive first, to make sure it is clean of anything unwanted. A good idea would also to scan it with Malwarebytes. If she doesn't already have that, the free version can be downloaded and installed to her computer from here=

http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Just click on the "Download now" button on that page, not the "buy now" one.

That particular software is one used and recommended by us to anyone suspecting they may have a virus or other type of malware. It is very good and used as a first step by most security experts. It will find and remove most common and not so common problems if they are there, and can be directed at a plugged in hard drive.

Once installed, it is a good thing to have, and to run a scan regularly of whatever computer it is installed on.

Ah, good, and it looks like I am preaching to the converted

We just need to convert mum now eh? Ha ha.

Just to add for when you get the enclosure, providing the hard drive will run, it should show up in the same way as a flash drive, and will possibly have wording similar to "Local disk (K:)" "K" is whatever drive letter the system allocates to it.

Do not click any button in that opening window. Dismiss or close it, and go to "Computer" from the start button, it should show there, right click on it, and you should then see the option to "Scan with Malwarebytes" or whatever anti-virus she has. In the case of malwarebytes, it will open, then scan the drive for you.

Please remember to use the "Safe to remove hardware" before disconnecting it. I know of folk who have done damage by forgetting that with a disk drive.

Can i just add here that to scan any added or extra drives with MBAM..... you need to have then plugged in and select the 'FULL' scan.

Make sure All drives are ticked before running the scan..

The quick scan will only check your main drive.

I'd have to agree with all posts on removing the drive for tests and data removal , on another note if hard drive passes all tests and the stop code persists and a windows disk isn't available may I suggest a linux based os , one of the easy ones that will get you back computing till a windows disk can be sourced , Zorin linux looks and works like windows 7 and probably the easiest to use in my opinion.

Ok thanks for that Armageddon.

I have just received the case but would you believe it, it's about 2cm too small!!! The screws in the hard drive prevent me connecting it!! Damn it!! Why cant they be universal and easy!!!!

it's about 2cm too small

All 2.5 inch SATA drives are standard.

Does your hard drive have a connection plate screwed to it?

There should be no screws sticking out of your hard drive.

Does your drive have a bracket attached?

If it does - you will have to take this off.

The drive should look like this:

In addition to my previous post .....

If your drive looks like this one - it comes out with a bracket attached.

This must be removed before you can attach it to the enclosure.

OK

With the laptop switched off.

Assuming that the drive is in the enclosure .........Plug in the 2 USB connections.

Switch on and boot up.

You should get a message that Windows has identified new hardware.

Let it complete the process - 30 seconds or so - it should tell you it is ready for use.

Go to Start > Computer.

(This is where we hope .........)

You should be able to see a new drive letter - just as you would when you plug in a pen drive. ( memory stick )

Can you access the drive ?

Hi in Kens absence , and if the drive has been recognized by your mums laptop I'd suggest first things first and run a full Malwarebytes scan, we can then go from there.

Sorry Ken didnt think you was here

Did Windows recognise new hardware ?

Is E:\ your hard drive?

One of these will be the CDROM drive.

Unplug your external drive from the USB ports - does one of the letters disappear ?

I think i has recognised it. The cd drive is (F), i have Vista© Local disk (D) and Data(E)

I will unplug it now and look. Doing so safely.

when i safely remove it it comes up as (D)

Fine.

Local Disk is normally a partition on the main hard drive.

Can you check to make sure.

If mum does not have MBAM installed download it from here: Click on Products - you want the free version.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_pro

Install it and update it. Don't run a scan with it yet.

Let me know when it is installed.

It is good to have on your system as it will scan for malware ( it is one of the best on the market )
